At Alexisbad we caught a railcar up the short 2.7 km branch to Harzgerode and returned back to Alexisbad on it. At Harzgerode we had a 20 min layover and as there was a supermarket next door essential refreshments were purchased. a crate of 11 500ml bottles of beer. We forgot to buy any food though.

Now back at Alexisbad we had a 2 hour layover before the next steam service south so the plan was to get some lunch and drink some beer. But as we where debating which way to go this came around the corner. So on we went back north up to Gernrode behind her.

I've done exactly the same thing, tricky if there is a queue at the till though :nail:
No wonder you all look borderline anorexic !! :rolf::rolf::rolf::rolf::rolf:.

bet that box van had LGB stamped under it:rolf::rolf::rolf::rolf::rolf:

Looking at these pictures it occurs to me that LGB could have bought the line and made a theme park of it............. LGB LAND!!!!!!!!!!

It would appear that it costs the Local Authorities, who own the line, quite a few bob to keep everything going. Subsidised for the tourist industry. 10,000,000 euro a year was banded about - dont know if that true though.

Sunday morning, another fairly early start. A trip up the Brocken:bigsmile:
It starts with the departure from Wernigerode and some street running.

Then the loco is coaled for the accent. This went on for several minutes as the fire is built.

This is the sharpest curve on the line. 60 metres radius, and its a full 180 degrees as we turn at the head of the valley and then run alomg the other side. Climbing rapidly as something like 1 in 30. It really does look steep.

Is the shunter in post 60 using remote control and wireless?

Could be that the orange light on the roof indicates all systems are good!

Yes Steve. Orange light on top flashes when on RC.
Was interesting to see the coaching stock being brought in from the storage sheds. The shunter left riding on the steps of the loco and returned on the front (rear?) coach balcony.

Yes, it's as Alan says - one person operated! The guy in the orange overalls was controlling the entire operation, mostly from the ground, riding shotgun on the steps to save his legs around the yard.
Would make an interesting scene on a model?

Lordy some great photos ........how many of those 2-10-2 jobs are there?
18. Seven are in long term storage dotted around in various shed. 11 Are in use or under going maintenance. Each evening there were 7 or 8 locos in Wernigerode yard - kept hot all night ready for the morning.
