New Haven Neil said:
Lush - keep em coming! Was Cyril there?
We didn't meet Cyril because he didn't show up. Although leaving Wernigerode Westerntor station yesterday we thought we saw him filming on the crossing with camera and tripod.
Pitty really cause I was looking forward to meeting him.

and on to Hasselfelde

Wonderful pics, look forward to even more, and maybe a full write-up of the trip if one of you feels like doing it (yes, I know, a bit like going back to school and having to write an essay on what you did on your holidays.....) - but it would be great to read, and very useful to any of us who are lucky enough to do something similar one day.

Out of interest, what was the area like for the non-railway things - hotel accommodation, food, shopping, things like that? I have heard in the past that some bits of ex-East Germany are still a little grim and basic compared with the Western parts, in that they haven't really "caught up" yet since reunification - but maybe this is very out of date now?
My only visit to the area (the Western side, around Osterrode) was one holiday there as a kid, around the end of the seventies, because my Dad wanted to go back and see the area again - he was stationed there in 1946. I well recall looking out over the border towards the Brocken, seeing all the aerials and stuff on it when they were all still operational as a communications and listening post, and seeing the fences, the mined strips of land, the watchtowers and deserted villages on the other side..... very eerie and made a big impression on me.

Jon.

That No 1 post shows 2 Kamels both with the extra buffers and flashing light fitting (it is the orange blob on the cab roof). I am not able to make out the numbers on that pic, though a later post does show 199-872-3 which is similarly fitted so I guess that one of those in Post 1 is that. But what is the other one and do you have any more close ups of kamels please?

Nice selection of photos. I'll have to pay the area a visit again at some time, as it looks a bit different to what it was like on my previous visit to the main Wernigerode-Nordhausen line back in October 1981.
Still got the passport with all the special stamps in it for visiting the "sensitive" border area of the DDR!

OK I'll post a few photos of the Harz trip from the weekend.
After arriving on Friday afternoon and meeting up with the rest of the gang the idea was to go to the hotel and check in. The hotel was only 200 meters away but it took over 2 hours to get there. There was the small problem of Wernigerode HSB station and engine shed in the way, but I didn't mind too much.

After checking in and taking this shot from the bedroom window we thought it would be a good idea to sample the bar Alan (stockers) sampling the dark beer.

Evening meal was take in the hotel restaurant, with views over the engine shed HSB line and main DB line there was always something moving about. Drinks arrived at the table by this LGB 2-6-2 loco and two wagons.

After evening meal we went back across the road and "bashed the shed". There appeared to be only one employee on duty and went and put the shed lights on for us. This was truly awesome, there was 8 off 2-10-2s, all in steam. 2 off Kamel diesel locos and 2 off Mallet locos not in steam.
