Newbie and his Steam Tram

We buy our steam oil in 5 gallon/25 litre containers, so I'm never going to run out...

Gas I get from Chris Moody, who lives just an easy half-hour away from us.

That depends on where the displacement lubricator is piped in. Correctly it should be AFTER the regulator, allowing it to be refilled with the regulator shut and the boiler still in steam. It is rather handy to know how yours is piped.

The correct procedure is to open the drain valve to expel water and any remaining pressure, then open the filler and allow the rest of the condensate to drain (if oil appears then just close the drain early). With the drain closed fill with oil and reseal the filler. Ready to run.
OK, gotcha, never tried that.

Have drained and re-filled as your second para, but have never investigated the first, simply because 3rd gas, 2nd steam oil, and 3rd boiler top up have traditionally all occurred at the same time, with third boiler top up including a re-filling of the bunker.

I s'pose the other reason for not looking at continuous running is also to do with the way I operate, which is minimal shunting, and lots of tail chasing. In addition, I tend to steam more in the winter months than summer, so four gas tank fulls = cold extremities :nod:

No, it never does to leave your extremities out in the cold!:confused:

Right guys think I’ve had a breakthrough. Will this
de-ionised suffice?

I personally would not use it I've been using filtered rain water for at least 25 years and no problems
suggest you steer clear of de-ionised water.

Easiest way is to leave a clean bucket or similar in the garden then any rain water collected is filtered through a standard water filter or coffee filters. Job done (for free if you carefully put your coffee filters back interested box and don't tell anyone :mask:)

Well done that lad, full marks, have a star.

It's just an age thing - and the number of postings on your thread. Sometimes we read and forget. As for those that don't have live steam (like me at the moment) it is interesting to read!

No, no - we were having a little dig at ourselves.

Don't take it all too seriously, this is a hobby after all, and this forum is generally a fairly easy place to be.

If you have a look around, there are some people who play up to their shortcomings :devil:

'...in domestic electric irons.'

Missed that part out, eh?

Wouldn’t know if that meant it was any cop or not :D

Would be impressed if it had a picture of a train on front and said ‘suitable for live steaming’
Though I imagine now I will be proven wrong :D
