Newbie and his Steam Tram

If you want a cheap version of the Viking (as opposed to the Accucraft one), then there is this scratchbuilt one on offer - a wooden body apparently, on a Playmobil track-powered motor block....

Could probably do with a repaint and maybe some more detailing, but it doesn't look to be too bad. Probably wouldn't (nearly said wooden't  ) be too difficult to battery R/C it......?

Jon.

Something struck me as "odd" when I looked at the final photograph of the scratchbuilt 'Viking' on ebay. The wheelbase of the Playmobil chassis has been increased by moving one axle into the space where one of the weights would normally be. I wonder if the resulting loco has only a single driving axle . . . or whether the builder has done something to extend the drive shaft! Picture shows underside of 'Viking' on the top; standard chassis below . . .

A visiting "Lilla" on shed at the CFR yesterday.image.jpeg
From what I've been hearing from a couple of friends who are much more heavily into live steam than I am, the supply of Lillas (that is the new one, yes?) is very problematic at the moment - at "Steam in Beds" a couple of weekends back, people were complaining about only being issued with one loco per dealership.....

Jon.
Jon, there are plenty of "Lilla" in circulation. Two have been at the CFR in the last couple of days. Dealers only had to order what they required from Roundhouse Engineering.

That there 'Lilla' is just about the nearest thing that RH have ever produced to a proper scale model. Lots of detail, the usual flawless RH running OOTB, and no doubt a level of reliability and longevity that other makers bust a gut to earn. The only downside, IMO, is the awful appearance of knurled gland packing nuts at the hind end of the cylinders. If and when RH replace them with fittings of a quality to match the rest of the model, I'll be getting one of my own.

There was Rhinochugger but as much as I have a soft spot for narrow gauge diesels when I came across the GVT I quite literally fell in love with it

That and I acquired one of those new Mamod diesels from the Warley show
:D
I can see how you were tempted by the Mamod :nod:

Well, that's good news for those who want one.... I was merely relaying the statements that I had heard from several traders at the Dunstable open day....

Tac what about the RH Darg, surely an object of desire?

Nossir. I get no 'resonance' with Indian NG of any kind. British and South African -now British, OTOH, I am very familiar with, having ridden many of them. Moreover, the RH D looks pretty bare to me in terms of detail, and I'd much prefer the Accucraft K1 which seems to offer a lot more detail for the ££££££££. By comparison with the D, the Accucraft K1, like the NG/G16 is awash with fine detail, as anybody who has one, or has seen one, knows well. My NG/G16 is a frequent visitor to our main track over at Ramsey Mereside, and is always a crowd-puller.

Aha inadiquate specification Tac, was actually meaning to talk about the 'B' Class. A superb piece of kit to any eye I would have thought and mostly British Built to boot.. Forgot about the RH 'D' Garraett!

Adreeg, Jon, it is a lovely model of virtually scale appearance, of that there is no doubt. But it is NOT at home here in UK, unlike Lilla and her ilk,, and I've never seen one in the tin, apart from the half-size model at Ferry Meadows.....

Bit of an update;
Had a lovely pair of carriages courtesy of North Pilton works. He’s starting to look rather at home with a small train behind him now.
