Newbie and his Steam Tram

Like a lot of folks here, I've been a live-steamer for many years, starting off with ride-on stuff, over fifty-five years ago [which I still do], and gradually working my way down to the smaller stuff in G1MRA, the 16mm Association and my own local railways, here, and in Canada and the USA.

In all that time, I've never used de-ionised water, although I HAVE used rainwater, with a small additive that one puts into it to maintain the correct Ph.

I'm still not sure if you have gotten the message, or if you are jerking our collective chains here, when we say NOT to use de-ionised water, no matter how pretty the label might be. However, you keep on dangling the stuff in front of us.

I have no more more input into this thread.

What's the pH balancing additive you use, Tac? I've never heard of folks adding anything to filtered rainwater, is it something we should all be doing?

Jon.

Sod's law, we're in for a drought!:D

Well done - I can attest, having only quite recently got a couple of live steamers myself, that there is a huge mixture of satisfaction and relief when one actually fires up successfully for the first time.... ;)

Indeed. I think I’ve already taken a liking to hot steam oil and missing fingerprints.
Remember that first time I got a hornby train set pieced together and working; didn’t think that could ever be topped but I was wrong

Yes, getting a loco into steam for the first time is like watching something previously inanimate come to life...... a bit like Doctor Frankenstein ("that's Fronk-en-shteen!"), though not quite so creepy...... ;)

Oh there’s only two more at the moment id like.
Eventually a roundhouse Lilla and maybe, if I’m ever lucky enough, an accucraft Viking diesel

Now, I can assure you... Live-diesel is an entirely different kettle of fish!:nod::nod:

The Vikings DO come up now and then on evilBay, I've seen a couple of them in the last few years.... yes, they fetch a reasonable price, but you might get one if you're lucky.

From what I've been hearing from a couple of friends who are much more heavily into live steam than I am, the supply of Lillas (that is the new one, yes?) is very problematic at the moment - at "Steam in Beds" a couple of weekends back, people were complaining about only being issued with one loco per dealership.....

I’m hoping Viking diesel evilbay bingo gets me lucky one night

As for live diesel now that would be something.
Happy with the track powered Drewry for now though. Saying that an rc conversion........

Live "diesel" hasn't something been done with aero engines?

There was a Viking on evilbay the other day ....................

There was Rhinochugger but as much as I have a soft spot for narrow gauge diesels when I came across the GVT I quite literally fell in love with it

That and I acquired one of those new Mamod diesels from the Warley show
:D

If you want a cheap version of the Viking (as opposed to the Accucraft one), then there is this scratchbuilt one on offer - a wooden body apparently, on a Playmobil track-powered motor block....

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/GAUGE-1-S...129308?hash=item1ec0b5599c:g:kr8AAOSwZ1BXf1uS

Could probably do with a repaint and maybe some more detailing, but it doesn't look to be too bad. Probably wouldn't (nearly said wooden't  ) be too difficult to battery R/C it......?

I had saw that a few times and been tempted, think my next investment though would be looking to convert my track powered drewry to RC
