If Paul is reading this, he may well have an insight to what the issues are with Internet Explorer, but I suspect the consumer base for IE is relatively small, and that an investment in time and effort to resolve the niggle, that it is probably going to be stuck in the "round tuit" !

I for one, would be interested to see the current percentages for browser-type.. If only for academic interest.. :nerd:

Without doubt I am an historic I.E. user, 20 some years. It is only quite recently that I've noticed problems with it. I would use FF more if I understood better how to get it to provide what I want (like my question above). I moan almost daily to M.S. about I.E. through their 'smiley' feedback button (I wonder who, if anyone, else bothers, or has even noticed it hiding in the corner).

I have part answered 'how to get a desktop icon in FF', but only for the searched for (front) page, not for one even only one level down the menu. Several pages that I have icons for are four or five levels down, so moving them to FF would just mean a lot more clicking. That's not what I call an advance! Even here I come straight in on New Posts. as I stay logged in all the time.

Late Edit :- I should point out that whilst the extra clicks are a nuisance, it's the waiting for each page to load that is the real PIT. . . . A... Darned system is slow enough without that!

I read somewhere that Microsoft are stopping support for IE and that IE11 will be the last version. As an aside I have been using Opera and Vivaldi for sometime with no issues using this forum.

I can't stand Edge, so I'm on Winders 10 using Google (supposed to be chrome but I don't think it is) but I don't have any probs, apart from t'internet dropping out which is much less frequent than it used to be - it seems that Openreach have eventually found Norfolk; I saw them playing with a bit of blue string down the road a couple of weeks ago :nod::nod:
I hope it was WET Blue string that works far better :)

and so today, on the same computer, using the same mouse, it works and I get all the icons.

go figure. ( I put the wrench in on the post above)

Greg

Glad I'm not the only one! It seems fine on FF but I can't save an icon to get me straight in, just to the Facing page. That is obviously an FF thing.

I liked IE and just moved to Firefox which is working fine everywhere. I found some nice features on Firefox but some features of IE are missiing.

IE is not working with HTML 5 , a new software language.
The new GSC software is possibly using this HTML 5 as any new software.
Don't ask me what is HTML 5. I don't know.

I encountered some difficulties on some web sites due to the old design of IE. Difficulties solved with Chrome or Firefox.

I expect with Firefox not to have the tracking of Chrome/Google, or in a lower size.

Normally I use Android x-86 on an HP Laptop (i7-5500U processor) with google chrome browser.
This is a stable version of x-86, so the variations I see (as do you) must be assumably from the website.

The stupidity goes on!!! This morning I entered from my newly saved icon (for FF) and immediately started to the same old same old. When I checked, my so-called FF icon had brought me in with I.E.????????? Not only that but the missing cursor and the delay typing (that's been missing for some weeks) are back with a vengeance. I don't know why we bother!:banghead::mad::banghead::mad::banghead::mad::banghead::mad:

I have realised that one problem is that FF is not my default browser, nor will it be until I'm ready to abandon I.E. permanently. I wonder now if I DID make it the default would I then be signed out of all the (I.E.) icon websites or would things carry on a before?

Yeah, if you click on the 'show all' beside those icons, it reveals who posted what

All in all the forum's OK.

Don't know about Firefox as I've never really used it.

I've said this before, so will bore people again, W10 seems to be happiest on machines that were delivered with it as the original operating system.

That said, I'm not a lover of Mr Gates' empire, and I do not like the constant meddling of the Microsoft programmes every time they bring out a new issue. Graphs in MS Excel used to be so easy, but in the latest edition they're an absolute nightmare - why do they have to fiddle? :banghead::banghead::banghead:

I do use Firefox (which seems to have links with google). I bookmark sites that I want to revisit but my opening page for FF carries Icons for the most visited sites - so I can either click on bookmarks or the icons.

Don't forget, we are all there to help improve Microsoft. When it is improved, and you are comfortable with the programs you use, then the next incarnation of MS doesn't have them. But, I guess, all the good bits we liked are incorporated in a "new" version (available to purchase). We are just part of an experiment - no analogies (except the first four letters - maybe as a euphamism - compare with W10). And yes, Ian's right, it doesn't seem to work properly with older computers that had other versions of MS.

But I know I'm a moaning type of person. I liked Windows 95 - you could a lot more with it for things that I do.

You will need to go into setting and set default browser, with a shortcut, if you wish it to open in a specific application, then you need to identify that within the shortcut.

I don't have a problem with how to change the default browser, I just would like to know, before I do, if I will be signed out of everything and need to sign back in. I have two sites that I cannot access passwords for, so would need to make contingencies (if at possible at all).

I am amazed how things have changed.

When I first used the internet, when you left a site that you were logged in to, it automatically kicked you out

Then things got 'smarter', and you could stay logged in, or the browser or site would remember your password.

Then evilbay got hacked, and they recommended that you did not have your password 'remembered' by your browser.

Yet here we are, worrying about settings and browsers not remembering passwords o_Oo_Oo_Oo_Oo_O

I only allow my browser to 'remember' passwords for unimportant, non-transactional sites. Having said that, some of the sites with 'remembered' passwords will have a certain amount of basic personal data :rock::rock::rock::rock:

But evilbay and Paypal are both a definite no-no, banking is encrypted through my anti-virus (I don't use the bank's version).

This forum is one of the few 'remembered' ones :devil:

Likewise. Though I do frequently access a lot of stored data (some self-stored) on some websites. Generally I hold these as icons on the desktop, for quick easy access. These are also reasons why I hate having to 'open an account' anywhere online just to buy something, particularly when I may only be using the site just once. Some sites do now seem at last to be getting the message and you can buy as a 'Guest' with no account, but it's slow going.

I'm also OLD so hate any change, just out of cantankerous cussedness!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yep, I tend to use a guest option where available, just to prevent the subsequent spam emailing. Like, I've booked a hotel in Swindon, so I get bombarded over the weeks with deals in Swindon - I stayed there in May - am I likely to be going back that soon?

The limited horizons of highly paid IT geeks never ceases to amaze me :rock::rock::rock:

At the moment, the banner advert here is mainly for Jacamo shoes (on my login) - yeah, well, I did look there a few weeks ago, and bought a pair half price in a sale somewhere else - but that was then, job's done, I'm not buying any more for a while, so they're missing a trick by not offering me different adverts :devil::devil::devil:
