I hate op systems that put files where they think best - they are wrong. I know exactly where I want them.

What?
Even when you have saved them to exactly where you told it to, and not to where you thought you had?? ;):giggle::giggle:

I've got Win10 Prof. I do not like it. But then, I am an IT dunce I suppose.

I don't even know my own mind sometimes so how does it know?

A filing nightmare when it puts things where it wants to! I now have three files for the same subject - one in pictures, one in documents and one on my external hard drive. I started off with the one on the ext hd (transferred from my old PC - XP). I didn't (knowingly or willingly) create the other two files. They are all large (and important) files - sorting out data duplication (or triplication) is a headache.

I converted from Win8.1 to Win10 months ago and have happily been using ever since, have no problem at all.
No filing problems at all, the only thing that changed was that I got my start button back and IE became "Edge".
But all is not lost evidently Win10 is the last one.

I changed to W10 when it was offered. It was OK to start with but then things started to fail. It refused to give me the weather, it refused to play cards, one by one things died. Once I found out I could put W7 back I did & things are back to normal.

How many are using it on P.C. though not Lappys, and without touch-screens?

Windows 10 does not "put" files in places different than win 8.1, win 8, wind 7 or anything.

There are concepts of "libraries" where the operating system will "find" file types, like pictures, no matter where YOU put them.

You can use these libraries, or use the good old documents, pictures, video folders that have been with us since Windows NT 3.51 ...

I tend to put files in my own structures, all from a common root, so it is easy to back up all my files.

I've been using it since October 2014. It's not evil or a conspiracy.

I have it on phones, laptops, tablets, desktops.

I have tips on my site to "tone down" some of the telemetry and obnoxious new features.

Me to on a lap top. No touch screen.
Does what I want it to do satisfactorily.

I never had w7. I did have W8 working very well until I succumbed to Microsoft persisting with want me to upgrade to W8.1. From then on nothing but trouble until Young Ben loaded W10 over W8.1.

hi all
If you are a CAD user its best to stay away from windows 10 as of today this is the message from Autodesk who supply high end CAD programs

"Windows 10 is not yet an officially supported operating system across the Autodesk product line. Autodesk intends to support many of our key products on Windows 10 and will add products to the list of products supported on Windows 10 as updates and future versions are released."

To install an Autodesk product even the latest release 2016 you have to uninstall the NET.4.6 application and reinstall after installing your autodesk product which apparently works.
hope this helps

I've just been looking at a similar thread on another forum; I don't want to appear lazy or whatever, but I'll copy my response to that thread below.

I have an Alienware laptop which came with Windows 8.1 installed; this was a replacement for a similar laptop damaged by an official technician sent out by Dell (who own AW) that had Windows 7 64 bit Ultimate installed on it; all mechanical drives had been swapped out for SSDs, and these were installed the current machine on receipt.

I decided to try Win10 but as a precautionary measure I took my SSDs out and re-inserted the regular HDD with Win 8.1 on. I'm very glad that I took that step, as within an hour I had decided to stick with Win 7 as there were too many things that irritated me with Win10 although I would say it's preferable to Win8.

Here's my reasons for staying with Win7

1. Windows 10 spies on you and sends huge amounts of data back to Microsoft.
2. Cortana has security flaws and I simply have no use for the function at all.
3. Not possible to remove the display of tiles from the start menu, which is also very buggy
4. It's far less easy to manage things yourself in consumer versions of Win10 than it was in Win7; forced updates, less access 'under the bonnet'

Now, having made the decision to NOT use Win10 I have had a real battle preventing Microsoft from insinuating this unwanted 'upgrade' onto my system; I have had to prevent auto-installation of updates because they keep trying to sneak the files to prepare for Win10 install, using oblique terms to describe what the updates are for, necessitating me checking each and every item to maintain the decision to NOT install Win10 and I actually don't care that MS are supposedly giving the new OS for free; I simply don't want it; and don't want it forced on me.

If anyone is equally sick of the imposition as I am, let me know and I'll help with Win10 avoidance methods.

Regards

Dave. Still resolutely sticking with Windows 7!

As technology marches on - I wonder how our ancestors coped with that huge step change of buying bread that was already sliced.............

You can choose what data to send back to MS
Cortana - simple - Don't use it
Tiles - Pretty sure you can
Forced updates - if many more users in the past had kept their PC's up to date there wouldn't have been as many rampant viruses.
Updates are there to fix flaws - don't fix it - the vulnerability gets exploited by the hackers - keep your PC "up to date".

Either that or use another operating system - You don't have to use any variant of Windows - there are plenty of others out there.

I'm quite happy to continue to use the operating system that I bought and paid for; that was Windows 7 64-bit Ultimate; I simply don't want to be forced to use a different system, regardless of how 'free' it is, and regardless of how much of an 'upgrade' it is - and that in itself is debateable.

If you can find a simple way of removing all tiling on the Win10 start screen please share it with us.... I am aware that it can be done, but it's a convoluted process - I just don't need all that garbage flashing in my face like a cheap poledancer trying to distract me from what I wanted when I opened the startmenu in the first place!
Although I run my AW on mains power 99% of the time and have unlimited data on my plan, there's no doubt that Live Tiles use power/data and that could be a concern for some.

If you read my posting I said clearly that what I do is check the purpose of each update to ascertain the content, and reject any that are telemetry based or pre-Win10 content - I take issue with your 'Updates are there to fix flaws' comment; many updates are NOT to fix flaws - and one example of that being KB3035583 which is the 'nag' that constantly exhorts you to 'upgrade' to Win10.

I have been using PCs since Windows 3.11 and am very aware of the importance of keeping up-to-date in terms of vulnerabilities; equally as important as ensuring that all SECURITY-related updates are installed is having quality solutions to malware of any sort.

I can't help but wonder what ancestors would have done if they had discovered that their sliced loaf was reporting back to the bakery.... probably burned the baker at the stake! Now there's an idea.............

Very easy, click the start (windows) button then you just right click each tile and click unpin from start.

I tried W10 on my lappie a few months ago. Generally I liked the usability of it, but there were some display driver issues, a couple of my old apps that I rely on didn't run on it, and worst of all it seemed to be running full tilt all the time, with the cooling fan going mad. Edge browser wasn't happy talking to some of my older Netgear network hardware (router & print server) - authentication problems.

I reverted the laptop to W7 and all back to normal.

There were quite a few reports on the Notebook Review Alienware forum when Win10 was first released to Joe Public, of Win10 'not playing nicely' with certain graphic card and screen combinations; and accepting that there is a virtually infinite number of hardware and software permutations, there was every likelihood of incompatibility issues......I actually don't have a problem with Windows 10 insofar as many folk are perfectly happy with it - equally however there a fair number of people who are not happy with it, like yourself ntpntpntp, and me, and the 51000 people who have downloaded GWX Control Panel and the 286000 who chose to use DWS Lite, and those are just the downloads through one host!.

I am simply getting frustrated that Microsoft seem to think they have a right to impose this change of OS upon satisfied Windows 7 users who wish to exercise the option to NOT be bludgeoned or hoodwinked into what to some people is a downgrade, and to others a less-than-mature operating system with all the problems that can entail.

"The more they push, the harder I will resist."
