Why the cities use this type of tram system?

Only advantages I see, over trolley buses, that [1] driver does not need to steer [2] overhead supply can be single wire instead of 2-wire system as in pure trolley buses.

But fitting 2 wires overhead probably much easier than digging on ground and fitting a rail.

If the intention is to allow the tram (or trolley bus) to follow a specific path only, modern digital technology can follow a painted line on road without deviation, thus negating the need for a physical rail on ground.

So it does seem like overly complex system with no benefit.

Around here, a painted line wouldn’t survive its first winter, nor would it be much use during that winter

It's not just the guidance - metal wheel on metal track is meant to reduce friction and be more efficient ................. in theory.

So the idea of a central track with the tram running on some sort of road wheels is a bit of a lose/lose scenario

I know it’s a daft idea, but as Mr Louis Brennan was an honorary Australian (born in Ireland, with the family emigrating to Melbourne, Australia in 1861 when he was 9yro) I’m still in favour of a G Scale version of his gyroscope monorail. Might have to outsource construction to an AirTasker
