Having recently traveled on the HSB railway with some G scale collages and traveled on the open tourist wagon, I thought it would be a ([strike]daft[/strike]) good idea to have a bash at making one.
Here's some photos of the real thing from the other week.

Now I'm not a rivet counter nor a top modeler, but as long as it looks right to me then Im happy. So first of all the doner wagon is this rather nice LGB open wagon. This was picked because it was readily available and reasonable priced. I know this is a steel sided wagon and the real one is wood, but you carn't have everything.

After a strip down the top panels had to be opened out. This was done by drilling holes and then cutting out with Mr jigsaw the filing down even (ish)

Got some of them cheap seats from a dodgy dealer at Stoneliegh eairler this year but they looked a bit too clean, a light spray with black paint did the trick.

Then after cutting the center doors down to size a trial rebuild was undertaken to see how things looked.

Brass handrails have now been fitted to the inside. Trim across the top of the center doors added and the locking levers repositioned, an end door cut out (not very successful)

Bit of a paint job in places. The chains have been added across the tops of the center doors (pinched out of swmbo's jewelery box whilst she was away) Communication cord boxs added, one at each end, and HSB transfers put on (thanks James Hilton for arranging the transfers for me) Need to add a few more minor detail parts, but she's ready for a road test.....

Excellent and it looks the part. The only thing that concerned me was the piece of tissue in post 3, did you have an industrial accident with the jigsaw? :eek:nphone:
Errr yes thats blood Paul. On drilling the holes across the top of the wagon I had to support the underside with me fingers. It was drill a hole and make sure fingers are out of way. Move to next hole and move fingers as well. Well I got through several holes then I forgot to move me fingers on the next to last hole. you guessed it I drilled into me index finger and it chuffin hurt.....:crying::crying:

Steve - it looks superb on the train, a great piece of modelling. The transfers sit well... and if anyone else wants HSB transfers I know the font to use now - as I had to do a bit of font matching on photos to get the right one :)

Well the agony was at least worthwhile, though I'd use paint to weather it in future :D

Big thanks to James for sorting the artwork for the transfers and to Fred for making the grey bins for the inside........:clap::clap:

Just one quick question. The transfers are them water slide ones like in Airfix kits. How do I waterproof them so that they don't slide off if it rains.

Varnish over them......
BUT check with James first to check which varnish to use. I had some transfers made in GSM days which disappeared when I varnished them.

The wagon looks great BTW Steve .
