Hornby 3.5" Stephensons Rocket

Not very controllable, points quite cheep to buy on Ebay I just sold a couple (they come in boxes of 2). As quite old now you really need to see it running if possible. Probably very little help to fix if they go wrong and the track is really weird. Each piece does both straight and curve depending on how you join them. This means the straights are a lot of very short wiggles. Oh yes additional coaches can be quite expensive to pick up and no wagons were ever made by Hornby. But they do look very pretty on the mantlepiece.

can any one tell me the good and bad parts of this loco, I am thing of buying one
If you are new to live steam you might find this a bit frustrating. They can be got to work reasonably well with patience but I would treat them as an impressive static model.

Wasnt there something with the gas tank..?
Yes, it can become brittle and leak, I have one and obtained a new tank from one of the smaller model steam suppliers many years ago, but I forget who.
not a very powerful engine from memory, some of the very early ones had the wrong valve gear , both LHS sets , I think, meant it would not run, the first one I bought from a shop in Hull had this problem but they replaced it with a working model.
haven’t run it for years, must dig it out and have a go with it.

I just think it is wonderful, like to have one run on my G scale track with other loco's but this is on 3.5" track but some track come with model

Oh another thought, I have seen a ‘Rocket coach’ on Thingiverse, it would need re scaling to 3.5 inch, I may try to print one over the winter.
Dave

WOW , have the Rocket, it is a lot bigger than I thought, lovey condition , have been used but keep well in the original box with 26 foot of track, new metal gas tank, real happy hope to fire it up and run this weekend

No co

No coach set then?

Didn't someone make some on this forum a little while ago?
When steaming, be very careful, as you don't really know the history of your engine, if possible get someone to help

One other point That I don’t think has been covered the drive isn’t direct to the wheel (although it appears to be) but I think does two revolutions to each turn of the wheel.
There are also points you can get, they are of a ‘Y’ configuration.
If you want goods wagon’s the tenders some times come up as a separate item(presumably as a result of locos failing and being dismantled never to return) and these can make reasonable period wagons without too much work.

Less than £200 . . . and maybe worth trying a lower offer?

Always worth a try, but they are in demand as many sets were loco only and some coaches I know have been used for mods to different types of coach or wagons.

yes not many for sale I have 6 old wood wagons will see if I can make a 3rd class wagon ,

Using Bachman Thomas Wagons I have extended the wheel gauge to 63.5 mm by putting in new axles, see no reason why the same process could not be used for you Rocket wagons. Here is a picture of my conversion to put new axles on Bachmann wheels.
