Yes, you can get 3 lithium-ion 14500,as a triangle, in the boiler-space..
If you are creative, you can keep a section of the large weight, and pack extra lead into places, to get the weight back to near the same..

To 'sort-of' tie-in, with other threads that have been active recently:
This works fine..

A DCC loco, fed through the auxiliary socket, from a PWM radio control battery system..
Admittedly, not quite the same as a direct-feed to the track connections, probably. - I have not traced the circuit, to see just where the socket connects.

Or, you can put everything in a trail car and connect with a two pin JST plug

I think your right & i am looking around for a coal tender. It looks a little tight fitting in the train & i can increase the amperage using a coal tender. Might have to be a 4 wire connector for lights.

It might be easier, to use the existing connector, plus 'something different' for the other pair of wires?

These latch positively, but are relatively easy to undo, if both pins wired in black, then they would almost disappear.

The Stainz tender usually has a motor in it.......
