photo-2.JPGThis was in a second handLGB 23196 Mogul.  Has Phoenix Sound pb8.  This is not the same locomotives I wrote about before.  This one actually works well in DC track power only.  I opened to see what made it work because the pb8 is designed for battery power.  I found these components in the locomotive.  Does anyone out there know what I have here?

The second photo is obviously a decoder. The top photo appears to be a 'third party' interface board. The PB8 is designed for use with a decoder as in this installation as there is no backup power supply as on the PB11.

Possibly the reason the sound works is that LGB 'engineer' a minimum start voltage for their locomotives to power up the factory sound. In your circumstances the PB8 board is seeing sufficient track voltage to power the sound board before the loco moves.
 
Cliff, you are correct.

The first pic is an LGB Onboard DCC interface PCB and the second is a LGB 55027 decoder.
 
Agree with Mark (Muns) about the interface and decoder boards..
The P8 will run from track power, once it gets a few volts, but may well have a rechargeable battery as well. - Does the sound keep going for 20-30 seconds after power is shut-off?
 
Thanks guys. Yes the sound does continue for half a minute or so. So if this is a DCC interface, should it work in DCC and MTS also?

Hi Jesse,

Yes - the LGB 55027 is a MTS/DCC decoder. The interface just makes it easier to add a decoder without having to muck about with rewiring the loco. Originally there would have been a plug that fitted where the decoder is currently connected that would allow it to work on an analogue layout.
