American Field Loco work in progress

Riograndad

Model Railroading, boats and oil painting,
Country flag
Hi all, latest little bash, very much work in progress but coming on quite well, picked it up secondhand(don`t know why was in shop and just ended up on my debit card)I got it home ages ago and just did`nt like it.It sat in the cupboard and as some time off and weather outside too wet n windy to do much I thought maybe a look at bashing the little beastie,as it needed to look more like a US loco,I have the idea its possible it was an import and modified by the railroad to suit its needs,After removing all the raised details(rivets etc)the cab was covered in 40 thou black plasticard to give a full cab to do away with the narrow roof on the original model, also side front windows added together with frames to front to do away with the oval windows, side sheets cut to suit but left the back window as was, handrails kept and reused, bell is a stainz item, smoke stack modified by cutting the round "box" spark arrestor off to give a short straight stack, front coupling taken off so front pilot could be attached, few extra pipes added here and there covered in black heatshrink as it looks better:).The dummy headlight is from spares box,no idea of its origin, the driver is a modified LGB figure to fit, some more rivets, nuts and bolt details to go on,some more pipework under the cab maybe, lettering paint and weathering should see it done;);).I think it has a Mexican/South American feel about it,see how it turns out, with all the mods still won`t pull the skin off a rice puddin so I suppose will have to build some cars for it now?!FIELD LOCO 008.jpg FIELD LOCO 009.jpg FIELD LOCO 005.jpg FIELD LOCO 015.jpg

Interesting, don't think I've seen one of those americanified before.

Looks like it belongs in a Louisiana paper mill. The company my Dad worked for brought pine logs in one end and discharged giant rolls of paper from the other. Plenty of "recyclable" wood and paper scrap to power the engines with. Wish I had pictures.

Nice.
Character. Very creative. Nice pipes, as we say in the music world.lol
To my eye, more something from south of the border.

Yes Charles that might work:)but my L`ll Hauler bash is nearer that prototype,no pics at mo,so I cant post as old pics been lost,,,,,I may take some more,if I do will post em later at some point;);)
After losing all my PC pics,my moby gave up the ghost at the weekend and so lost all pics on that too,,not happy and went out and bought a new one,,so got to try out new toy,as you do;);) and took a few pics today of the Field loco, little further on as sorting rivets etc and thought I might throw in her running mate,L`ll Hauler,a rare bash me thinks but have posted it before some years ago, field loco will have number and lettering for the Phoenix & Casa Grande (now will have two locos)which has trackage rights over the Colorado & Rio Grande as they only unboxed rarely:):).I will have make some freight cars now, already have passenger cars and caboose all L`ll Hauler items, sorry about the "junk" lying about, trackage updates going on when i get round to finishing it.need days off and some good weather:cry::cry:as its been going on for ages.

If one clicks on on chales m's link, then to the bottom and " related links" there are some splendid pics, including a tny drivered O&K 0-4-4-0t

Havent ridden on that cripple creek train.

I recall when ROW was being built. That was about when CC was permitted low stakes gambling, early on in Colorado fledgling gaming industry. As with central city, imho, totally destroyed the funky historical towns, and replaced them with...newly minted " historical" facsimiles.

I used to love exploring these areas, the towns and mines, pre gaming. They were almost but not quite dead, and as such, mostly unchanged for many decades. True remnants of the wild west. I recall meeting a old woman , curator of the Victor "museum", may c wing, who recalled seeing the smoke, from victor, of the great CC fire as a child.

I recall the old trolley depots, and other things, all now removed.

That CC train was Created as a tourist attraction, but might be worth the drive from denver, depending upon the equipment that is being operated.

Yes Steve some interesting pics there and yes a shame that some of the old towns are changing or worse disappearing, must say i`m suprised about the gaming, came across a few old towns while travelling there some years back,(used to go twice a year to visit a friend in Phoenix)and managed to see most of the southwest, but only went into CO a few miles(4 Corners area), the plan was to travel Colorado, the Durango and Silverton, the USS Arizona at Pearl Harbour for our 25th annie but divorce put pay to that after 24 years,HEYHO;);).I digress,,the only trains i rode while there was the Disneyland RR,the Verde Canyon Rly,must say a great day out and the ex RGS stock at Knotts Berry Farm,as we queued for the train they pulled the locomotive onto a spur, the crew then started to mess around with various tools and hammers,me thinking thats not good,so approached the Conductor and asked him if she would be running anymore today,,,,,great reply,,,,QUOTE."Sir,she`s a 100 years old,if she does she does, she don`t she don`t, its up to her!,,,,needless to say she ran again:cool::cool:

Great story.
I love both the knotts and disney trains.

If you can , on your side of the pond,if not too dear, the book on disneys trains, michael broggie i think, is very interesting. Since disneyland was a part of my childhood, as were trains, i might be biased. But it does have a some intersting if esoteric stuff. I never knew the disneyland trains were 3/4 size ( compared to standard gauge. )

I will look out for the book sounds interesting,I was under the impression that the Disney locos were ex logging locos and if i recall correctly the information actually came from Disneyland when i was there,(3times first in `82)over the loudspeaker system and I do stand corrected if i`m` wrong,Great looking little locos and appear 3/4 size as the rest of the buildings etc.Oh mus`nt forget Thunder Mountain, great fun with great effects as you go around,Walt Disney got the inspiration from Sedona on a visit there I believe, can understand why,i found that by accident, took a left turn down Oak Creek Canyon:):)
