Does it really matter whether the MM van was Royal Mail, Post Office, or GPO? This is a Tram thread. More tram piccies folks, keep em coming.

Memories, only memories, but yes, keep up with the tram piccies - even I don't have memories of trams running in the London suburbs (although my Nan always talked about catching the tram when she meant the bus) all I saw was tram rail embedded in the granite sets at Fulwell depot.

Did the Post Office have the Morris Minor/1000 fitted with Rubber Wings or was that just the earlier Morris 8? Ooops drifting again.

They did indeed! Not the actual Morris1000s though only Minors. They were also fitted to other models such as the Morris J type van and the old Z types.

Can't hold the ship, captain, she's drifting badly, but there was a guy from Lincoln at the Hunstanton kite festival and classic car show with an immaculately restored Royal Mail /Post Office J type - it took me back (as he wipes his eye):cry::cry:;););););)

I would love to have some tram models on my garden railway, but without the overhead wires, they look stupid.

Bit of a strong statment that!!!! If catenary is thoughtfully placed in a position where it is not nescessary to be frequently walking over it then it presents not problem, I used it for years on previous lines, without issues and there were usally 2 dogs running around as well

I just hope Network rail dont read your post, if they took the overhead down because it looks stupid I dont think there are enough diesels in the various fleets to cope

Indeed a strong comment. Don't let the Londoners read it. A good deal of that system used underground conduit with no overhead wires. Erm, yes, I think they looked odd!

Perhaps to look 'right' catenary needs to be 'modelled' in the same way as the tram/loco?

I'd have thought that "Rule 8" would have applied to the presence of catenary as well...........

Some homemade catenary (or to be more correct, trolley wire) may appear on part of my line at some stage in the future, but at the moment I just run the overhead electric stuff without it. Am kitbashing something at the moment that will have (dummy) third rail pickup shoes as well as trolleypoles, but I have no intention of putting down any outside contact rail!

The Conduit system, I believe there was a skate on the tram which collllected power from inside the conduit like a sort of 3rd rail there was some sort of stud contact system also somewhere which relied on magnetism on the Tram to switch the studs in ( ie become live) as the tram passed over them collecting power from a skate.
I read that there were electrocutuion problems with horses though!

You can see why they eventually convereted to overeaed.

The fllm Genevieve has some scenes where the conduit is clearly visible.

I made my own catenary on one line when LGB was very scarce in the 80s, Copper tubes & rodding soldered up set in concrete blocks Contact wire was N Gauge nikel silver rail.

OFF TOPIC Miamigo 259 a Caroline connection? ( I went to school with one of them!)

I maybe didn't phrase it right. I meant to have trams without overhead wires, makes the trams themselves look 'stupid'. The overheads look great in any style.
