Thank you for the explanatory diagrams - I've built a Belpaire firebox using more or less this technique but that's a much less complicated structure than the streamlined tank. I must take a closer look at model aircraft techniques. I believe you are right about 398 being in New Zealand - I have seen a YouTube video of it being unloaded there. Whether it will ever run is another matter - there have been issues with South African locos there because of wheel standards i think. Now where have I heard that before. They should have asked a railway modeller. Hope you like the attached picture ! - Phil

Thanks for uploading the pic of 398
It’s prompted me to order some proper plates for the model as at the moment it has my efforts based on prints from a photo of the model
I do like the pic which I think captures that slightly work weary look of a hard working loco
I’m sure you are right about the wheel issues. Restoring any full size steam loco is a huge challenge that needs deep pockets and much commitment of skills and labour. I suspect steaming 398 will need shed loads of the above

Here are a few pics of progress BB86B34C-4EBC-4BE7-973E-728CE7E2CC6E.jpegBD071203-4940-4D86-B41F-590B2E44D3CC.jpegCE157EC0-E2FA-4A88-98A8-AC06D2F02C07.jpegBB86B34C-4EBC-4BE7-973E-728CE7E2CC6E.jpegBD071203-4940-4D86-B41F-590B2E44D3CC.jpegon the RHDR 4-8-2
I’ve still to make new coupling rods and complete wiring arrangements for the sound in the Bachmann tender chassis that came from their old 2-4-2 which I picked up at a show for a tenner
Next week I ll start painting the model
However building engines is going to slow down a bit as I’m returning to volunteering on restoring full sized puffers

In the G16 thread I mentioned my next project to build an RHDR4-8-2 based on Samson
I thought I’d post a few progress pictures to show how it’s going
The boiler is from a mixture of 80mm Perspex tube, rainwater pipe and plasticard
The chimney and Dome were from Walsall model engineering intended for a gauge 3 black 5
The chimney I think will need reducing in height

Some pictures showing progress on building Samson (RHDR4-8-2)
It’s almost ready for painting
Outstanding jobs include shaping the coupling rods ;tender/loco coupling ; upgrading the electrical pick ups ; and sorting out the sound arrangements

The finished Job
Not an exact replica of the Romney Samson but I think it captures the look of the RHDR 4-8-2 s
Given its modelled to the same proportions as the other standard gauge locos I’ve built to around 1/24 scale it is the the largest British based loco in my fleetF9E748EE-4ADD-4380-AE20-1F0A62E8552E.jpeg188F4FA9-D546-4502-88FB-E1BAC17EC745.jpeg932B3DCB-B1C3-4303-BF7B-B5D4063F94ED.jpeg

Not being sexist these days, how about Barbi (or Ken) :mm:
Well, there's plenty of lady drivers on the preserved steam lines, but I was really wondering what size a scale driver would be

A lady driver to scale would probably scale out at about 7-8” or so Tall
No idea how tall Barbi is
I have some unmade Airfix 1/12 scale figure kits (Coldstrem guard, Beefeater, Lifeguard) if you fancy a real challenge at modification/scratch build. Probably a bit small though?

Thanks v much for the offer Mike
I think I ll pass on the RHDR sized loco crew
The engine, hopefully once we re out of the present situation, will appear at shows as part of the Crib Lane loco stud which is based on a Fictional British loco depot
The other locos are all crewed with figures around 1/24 (ish). Effectively a giant on the Footplate of the 4-8-2 is probably not going to happen
So the loco will represent a what if the RHDR has been full sized to fit in with all my other engines
