Reviving Mortimer Cimmney Cap

I am in the process of stripping down and "improving" my Mortimer. I have degreased all the bits fine, except the copper chimmney cap. It had over time gone black (I know that regular cleaning of it would have prevented this, but its too late now!!) I have tried soaking it overnight in degreaser, in thinners, scrubbing it in water, all to no avail. Any ideas please, other than getting a new cap!!!

Thanks

Try brasso or any other brand of brass cleaner. Failing that very fine wet and dry paper used wet. When I cleaned up a gauge 3 brass coach ( know your cleaning copper) to stop it scratching I did it in a bath full if water so it was always wet and the course stuff when rubbing washed away from the work area.

Submerge it in Malt Vinegar or Coca-Cola, & keep an eye on it for a few hours.

The very best hand-polishing compound is Solvol Autosol. Buy it at Halfords.

It is actaully made for polishing chrome on cars and motor cycles. A little goes a long way and the shine lasts much longer than with Brasso or other courser polishes.

I have actually seen it polish a shine on matt black paint!!!
