Motor block jamming

Hello all,

I'm hoping someone can help me. I've been having difficulties with a motor block i took off a aristocraft shunter and I'm currently using it on an ip engineering tram. I'm finding that it is running fine and it smooth with starting and stopping but the wheels are locking when it is running round. The locking is happening at any speed and the only way to solve the problem is to switch off the power which unlocks the wheels and it runs fine again then for another minute before the wheels lock up again!

I don't have much experience with electric running/motor blocks etc so not really sure where to start looking. It's running on radio control so it's not dead/dirty spots on the track.

Any advice is greatly welcome!

Regards

Daniel

Sounds to me as if the coupling rods are out of synch with the gears. Have you tried removing the base plate and moving one of the wheelsets along by, say, one tooth?

If it's a block from a diesel shunter (no connecting rods), then possibly a worn or split gear. Post a piccie of the block?

I tend to agree with Nick, a gear problem. Have to have a look inside.

Hi all,

I should have gone back to basics! I too was spending my time looking inside at the gearing to no avail. It was the coupling rods. They were not quartered and the screws attaching them to the wheels were all bending as a result. It must have recently happened as it has always ran well. I've taken the coupling rods off and hey presto, like new. Fortunately the motor has a double worm drive which runs both axles so I don't technically need the coupling rods.

Thanks for all the help

Rhino's easy quartering instructions.

Tighten up both cranks on one side and one crank on the other. The fourth crank just tighten the grub until it touches the axle.

Run the motor slowly to give the axles a few turns.

Tighten up the fourth crank.

Works every time for me ;D ;D ;D ;D

(Except I've mainly done it with 6 -coupled chassis, in which case, leave cranks 5 & 6 loose and do the same)
