When I started the EJ&KLR I aquired a pair of red 'anniversary' coaches of the starter set type to supplement Elly's 'BIG TRAIN' starter set. These were red (with decoration), yellow window frames and flat roofs.

One of my earliest repaint projects was converting these to a pair of Zillertalbahn coaches - these were started before I even aquired my first steam engine (an OBB U-class) and inspired by riding on the Zillertal coaches on the Welshpool and Llanfair as I originally intended a more UK based garden line... however the Austrian (and later Eastern Europe) bug bit and these Zillertal coaches were little used as the rest of my stock was either OBB or EJ&KLR liveried.

So as some of my other projects were finished last year, and Elly was talking about repainting her Stainz again I found myself mulling over a re-hash (actually at the same time as I was planning the Kof LGB/Liliput bash)...

So over the past few months, alongside the Kof and 2-plank open, I've stripped down and primed the coaches. Last night I applied two coats of satin green Humbrol enamel with my airbrush (Satin 163).
I've got some low-key small EJ&KLR transfers ready to apply - hoping to have these finished in a week or so, I'd like to take them over to the EJ&KLR for Elly's birthday.

The transfers were ordered last year - I did a big sheet for the railbus, Kof and a few vans...

They were designed on my MacBook Pro using Adobe Illustrator.

The transfers were printed by http://www.precisionlabels.com/ < Link To Precision Labels using an ALPS printer (that has white ink). These are waterslide transfers - the who sheet has a backing, so you just cut out what you want and it's a transfer...

This evening I managed to get the custom EJ&KLR transfers applied to my pair of LGB 2 axle coaches. These will be sealed with satin varnish but I couldn't help mocking them up to see what they would look like assembled.

Those look fantastic James. Do they have completely new roofs or have you adapted the original ones?

Thank you guys - I should get the satin varnish on in time to take them to the EJ&KLR this coming weekend :)

James - the roofs are LGB spares from Modell-land.
Paul - the windows are LGB originals, again, spares from Modell-land.

I think the roofs and window frames cost me about £35 as I got them as part of a larger order to reduce the postage.

Thanks Paul  - wow what a job that would be! ;)

I've always wondered why Marklin haven't marketed a Stainz and starter set coaches in a more realistic livery - to keep the price down, but appeal to the more mature market. That's what I'll have achieved with this - combine these coaches with Elly's Stainz and you have a realistic, but (relatively) cheap starter set. I know they've done the Spreewald with realistic coaches, and the current Wangerooge set, but they're quite a bit more expensive then the traditional LGB green stain and red/blue/cream coaches.

James, those Zillertal coaches look the business. I have been keeping an eye out to extend my rake of three Zillertal coaches but find them a bit costly....this is a great way to save on cost.

Kev you can definitely save pennies by doing it yourself. If you want the PDF file for the Zillertal transfers send me a PM and I'll email it you. John at Precision Labels can then print you some :)

as ever james great quality,,,,,

I can see you when your old and grey,,,, tucked away in an old shed,,, painting models for customers,,,, and being very happy with life!

you have talent no doubt,,

Haha - maybe so! One day!
At the moment I just don't have enough time to do commissions as people have asked in the past. I enjoy modelling but I also enjoy playing with my creations and with a young family, a job and mountainbiking as another hobby it's all a delicate balancing act :)

Thank you for the praise though - the greatest recognition is praise from your peers :)

james
a superb transformation
I am always amazed at what paint and a few details does to change toy-like to model

James
peers have nothing to do with it you are a very good modeller and you have a eye for detail and prepared to take a good model and turn it into something exceptional .
