Ip engineering roof

Two things I'd suggest (from experience! )
Try some Evo-Stik 'Serious Glue'. It's a bit like silicon and sticks to anything but still gives several minutes of movement before it goes hard.
Second thing is to use 1mm ply instead of the plastic sheet supplied with the kit. It's a lot easier to form over the roof and gives a better finish. You can get it from boat building hobby suppliers.
I'm just about to fit a roof to my IP Coach and I'm using the ply + Serious glue method.
I hope this helps Daniel.

Hi Tom,

I am also in the process of building a kit, if I were to go with the ply method would you cover the roof in anything or just fill and paint it?

Many thanks,
Ricky

Hi Ricky,
The ply you get from the ship modellers outlets (which is what I use) has a very fine grain so I just give them a quick rub over with wire wool and then good dollop of Humbrol matt or satin.
It's not 100% prototypical, but it does the job. And of course, rule 8 applies.

Hello all!

I've been trying to glue the roofs to the new coaches I have just purchased from ip engineering. I have historically used wood glue which seemed to work well . This time the roofs don't seem to be sticking this time. Does anyone have ay recommendations on alternatives to use?

Kind regards

Daniel
I posted this recently http://www.gscalecentral.net/m212658 when I built up some of their Darjeeling coaches. They were supplied, as are the other Darj' stock, with ply roofs.

The roof jig is well worth it if you plan to make a few. While I use the Evo-stick "serious" glue in some applications I have not used it here as it takes some time to fully cure and hold things in place firm. so you will need some way of holding the roof in place for a longish period

My preference is some form of thick superglue type, not the "rapid" fix type. I mark up the underside of the roof first to get the alignment right before using the glue. Then, using a finepoint applicator (available from most aircraft modelshops or supplied with some brands of superglue, e.g. Zap). I then apply a bead of glue to the top of the end and any intermediate bulkheads and roof braces. As this is on the wood endgrain a second application may be nessesary as it soaks in. Don't apply the glue to the vehical body side top edges.

Apply a bead of glue longditudinaly to the underside of the roof just behind the line you have marked up for alignment. This aligns with the body edges for fixing. Pop the roof in the jig, make sure everything lines up, hold your breath then press the body and roof surfaces together. It works for me.

Regards painting - Halfords filler primer reduces the grain and can be flatted back to eliminate it after a couple of coats. Colour coat as desired and then a sealing coat of satin or matt varnish - Testors/Microscale/Phoenix all work for me. Most matt enamels need a sealing coat in my experience.

I resorted to using Lead on mine. I fully painted the lead and its added extra weight to the carriages.
