As you can see from the last photo, still need to complete the coal yard, and the station approach in the background.

Quick question (famous last words?). When I woz but a lad, I`m sure these were referred to by 00 modellers as `coal staithes`, and yet I have a feeling a staithe is really where coal is loaded into ships ........ Any views on this?

Rik

Yes Rik, they were called staithes. To confuse matters even further we have a staithe at Martham (about 3 miles from where I live) and they've even named the lane that leads to it as Staithe Road. It's never had coal near it, so explain that one.
Nice bit of modelling by the way.

Staithe is common in good old Norfolk, indicating a boat mooring but I think it generally means anywhere goods can be loaded/unloaded. They were certainly known as coal staithes when I was a youngster. Coincidentally I've recently been searching (rather unsuccessfully) to find old photos of Spanish coaling points, to make a small version of this for my new loco workshop area. Another really nice piece of modelling there and no doubt I'll be pinching yet more of your ideas :D.

Rik,
Nice job again. GRS must be pleased to see you every time you visit , their simulated Coal Sales must go up in leaps n bounds. Happy to say it does look good.

Very very effective. I felt covered in coal dust from just looking at it!

We have real coal here!! ;) :D ;D ;D
(pictures later of the loads we have been gluing-up especially for today!!

Lovely ! as said staithes = dock in Norfolk speak but I don't recall hearing the word being used elsewhere :)

Excellent - I also knew them as coal "staithes"... and I've used real, unsimulated carbon products for mine - ie coal! Weak solution PVA seems to do the trick to stop spillage :D :D

Nope Jon, it's the real thing - I spent a happy half hour or so bashing lumps of coal with a hammer.
