Mmmmmmmmm difficult to find in any garden railway scale. Garden Railway Specialists have severely reduced their range, but they do have an odd coach or two in their G45 range which might assist

Interesting - I hadn't seen them. I'll have to get dimensions.

To be clear: I want a "reasonable" consist of cars, I'm flexible on the period/date. What I have determined so far is that the cars sold with "Emily" are the wrong type and color.

I really like the cars with the "duckett", and the teak looks beautiful, more work, but beautiful.

If I could make a consist close to the picture above, that would be cool.

Greg
That's what I want too. Not happy with the 4-wheel 'teak' Clarabell, but Smallbrook do a beautiful kit of parts.

IP Engineering also make a similar coach,
2-compartment+guard coach
which is only 295mm or 12.25" so it could fit the 4-wheel coach frame.

I'm still thinking of taking a couple of Emily coaches, cutting off one end and gluing them together. Mounted on a pair of Bachmann trucks/bogies and painted Crimson Lake they should look like a MR 48' coach.

Hang on - that's their old resin side parts glued together. I made a coach from them once just like that but with fewer windows.

They don't show a picture, but there's a 7 compartment version apparently.

I see the duckets on SB studios...

Greg
The 7 compartment is just 7 of the resin sides. The two end compartments are made by cutting one to fit. I made a coach from them once.

It's worth noting that I only want the Emily coaches to use the 6-wheel underframes, as I have 2 brown/teak bodies for them already. You might want to take a different route. Just be aware that most of this UK stuff is 1:19th, but aimed at 2' narrow gauge.

And I found a coach mock-up when searching for some of the GRS coaches in my photos. Just imagine that with Emily coach clerestories.

Aha. Got it. I thought I had a photo somewhere. The brake van on the left was made from an old Bachmann boxcar, and the coach is from those GRS resin sides - a 4-compartment kit. Both are on low NG trucks/bogies.

In post #41, I see in the picture above 4 doors, thus 4 compartments, but the "rooms" seem to be unequally spaced... so there are different sizes, does that go with different classes?

I guess I need the book??

Naw. See the photo of my green coach (#47) which is made with the same resin castings. It's equally spaced - their red version is just a funny angle. And they make the joint between castings happen where the door opens so it looks like a natural gap.

GRS used to sell those coach side castings loose, so you could make your own coaches up.

I don't really like the Bachmann 6w chassis, 'cos the middle axle is fake - I'd prefer the Piko version, but someone else had some difficulties with the Piko coaches on uneven track - top of an incline; sharp top of an incline :oops:

But then, that's easy for me to say, 'cos it's not me that's going to build the coaches o_Oo_O

Yes, I used to have a spare resin piece lying around. I wonder where it went. . . (The green coach photo is from around 2001.)

On any 6-wheel chassis you get the middle axle issues. My pal has uneven track and some of those long LGB 6-wheelers, and they just give up. I plan to make the middle axle go up and down - as I will do on the Emily tender, which derailed the first time I ran the train.

Actually, there were 6-wheel MR coaches rather like the "Emily" coach. Notice on this pic the coach lower right - it even has 4 compartments. A quick coat of Crimson Lake and you'd have a Midland Railway 6-wheel clerestory coach.

Just picked up an "Emily" coach for research and comparison. Makes the tender look big - but the photos show several different sizes.
I was also amused to note the windows look smaller than Clarabell as the white perimeter is painted on the glass.
If I am going to do 6-wheel coaches, those are nice underframes!

Lots of good history here of the Midland & Great Northern Joint Railway, which was owned by (you guessed it) the Midland Railway and the Great Northern Railway.

The "Railway Race to the North", a fabled series of events in the 1885-1895 period, was a province of the express Singles. Here's one about to depart Kings Cross on the first leg of the race to Aberdeen.

4-2-2_GNR_1001.jpg

The Midland coaches, which were apparently often mixed with the teak coaches of the GNR, would have been maroon (= crimson lake) as shown in the photo in my post above.

Most Aster Stirling Singles pull all-teak consists. Like this one on a euro eBay site:

s-l1600.jpg

Which reminds me - those curled edge roofs are going to be an issue on a modified "Annie" or IP Engineering coach! Maybe some 1/4 round and tissue paper covering to hide the joints?

Murray Wilson's son Nick was running a similar train at Cabin Fever early this year - it shows up on the videos.

Finally, I note that Hornby made a set of Midland clerestory coaches in 4mm scale. They are a useful reference for color and lining.

Midland Railway freak in a previous life, I suggest reference to Jenkinson & Essery’s standard work “Midland Carriages - An Illustrated Review.” . This Hornby thingy don’t look nuffin’ like the real thing!

OK confused, The Stirling Singles were on the Great Northern... But my understanding is that they did not run the Midland coaches.

Greg
Like everything - it depends. Around 1900 the GNR and the MR had several joint deals, so they ran various combinations of their own and their partner's rolling stock.
Those photos we found clearly show the Single pulling a mix of GNR and MR coaches.

A few more interesting photos of the coaching stock that may have been pulled by the Singles.

4-wheel GNR coach. Could make a Thomas "Annie" into that.

So - TMI I guess? o_Oo_O

The perfect train for a Stirling Single would be a set of proper-length 6-wheel teak coaches. Like these, shown at Cabin Fever by Nick Wilson behind his Single:

single-cabin-fever.jpg

None of the GNR coaches, as far as I can tell, ever had a clerestory. As I have 2 'teak' Thomas coaches, I thought I could use the Emily coaches, with clerestories, to make a longer coach with trucks/bogies painted MR red. We have plenty of evidence that they pulled Midland coaches.

But if you have no coaches to deal with, then a set of 6-wheel Emily coaches with new roofs (notice the rolled-edge of the GNR coaches above) and a coat of teak - oh, and a duckett from Smallbrook for the guard - and you will have a very nice consist/train.

So the b&w picture that showed 3 different coaches was NOT GNR? I thought the GNR was the only line that had the singles.

So if indeed that picture is indeed on the GNR, then you are telling me that there were Midland coaches used on the GNR?

Again I thought you stated that these 2 railroads were in dire competition and the Midland coaches were not on the GNR.

Confused.
