BREDEBAHN - The complete history in pictures (and a few words)

Now some of you may have noticed that the route through Teisch tunnel has, at this stage, been joined to the new route and a reversing loop thus formed. Although the LGB reversing loop modules were used, this was not a success and the layout was soon converted back to a conventional loop arrangement as shown in the 2007 track diagram.

It is really amazing how quickly nature heals the scars that you inflict upon her, and the new line very soon became immersed in the natural growth, as did other parts of the railway including Teisch station and tunnel. The look for which the Bredebahn eventually became best known was under way, and I had absolutely nothing to do with it! Some last pictures from 2004 (and see how many spot the subtle changes being made to the station layout in this series, as enabling works for finally removing Radius 1 curves got underway) .......

2005 started as one of those deep and crisp and even years... It's nice when it thaws out and most things still work!

It was also the year when the minimum track radius was to be increased to a minimum of Radius 3. Now by metre gauge standards R3 is still ridiculously tight, but you will have noticed that the locos and stock on the Bredebahn were now maturing and at least these lengths of vehicle looked reasonable on R3 whereas they look ridiculous on R1.

Here's a set of pictures depicting replacement of the pointwork at one end of Honigfallen station. Loose laying in ballast is very handy when you are doing this kind of exercise - the great hand in the sky acts as the lifting crane, and then it's simply a matter of realignment and hacksawing the rail to fit (don't buy those expensive mini lengths, even if you can find them - just cut the rail, it's easy). Ballast, tamp and fettle, and enjoy!

Now doesn't R3 flow better than R1?

o please start on the new line....

The 180 degree R1 return loop at Honigfallen was also lifted during this year (one of the few parts of the original trackbed to become dis-used) and some relaying was also undertaken on the platform roads where some heave had occured. A miscellany of pictures including a gratuitous cat picture!

So, as Neil has corrected observed, the RhB identity was clearly starting to emerge on the Bredebahn in 2005.

Excellent thread, John. I was going to say that RhB electrics still don't look right with pans down, but seeing the clearance in the tunnel I can understand why they stay safely locked down....:D

An excellent inspiration to get out there again as soon as the weather allows....

Cheers
M

I see that the three inspectors have approved and claimed the platform for themselves..

At the moment my garden is a muddy mess, and the new railway looks very barren in it, It' nice to be reminded how well they bed in with nature in time!

This is good reading John, looking forward to the next installments and end more so to the start of BredeOstBahn in the spring  yes 8|

John, that is really a GRAND railway. It has the lot, cats for passengers, lump hammers for freight.
It should bring all the family much enjoyment.

Really enjoyed reading about it, and with the pictures made it even better. Sorry now I didn't keep a pictorial view of the building of mine. Now get a move on and get the new layout started. And don't forget the catenary, it's a must for RHB. Mine has been up 3 years (the RHB type before that tramway) and it makes the difference:thumbup:

Tell me about it - couldn't get any peace. Just stood there shouting and quoting the Rulebook..........

To close 2005, there were a few new arrivals on the motive power front. Including a battery powered loco - Danny - and the little 0-4-0 Breitenau which came to me new for just £99. The attractive green Flatiron was a little more and arrived in secondhand but mint condition from a collector in West Sussex.

Oh, love the green 2/4 John, I haven't seen one of those before. This thread is giving me such temptations!

And now, almost a year later, I will shortly close the history of the Bredebahn in its' final years from 2006 to the end. And hopefully will be able to continue with the story of its' successor which only now is beginning to take shape.
