Who needs Friends like these.

I have a friend who likes to send me pictures with a small but effectively flippant comment to accompany it. It normally starts like this- I bet you can't build this. The first one was this wagon currently on the DEV in Germany. The specs arrived with the proviso that it had to run through a R2 s bend! It was a 4 axle boxcar that ran on the KAE.

Recently he kindly :@ sent me another photo and drawing. It was for a small trailer that runs behind a Pigsnout railcar. Well he got me this time - right between the eyes. I built it with the thought of it being a totally impractical item that wouldn't work and just be a waste of my time. Well I was wrong. It follows along quite happily behind my railcar. Not only that but it backs up just as happily. I do not think it existed on the NG lines of Germany but it looks good trailing along with the railcar. As a result I have been asked to build another one for a friend. There have been other variations built for other railways now too.

In 1982, when I was undergoing my training to become military railway officer, I was lucky enough to have a day out on the Ost Hannoversche Eisenbahn, and was permitted to drive one of these VT508s for an hour or so. It had a small single axle trailer which I was told helped it trigger the track detection system. It was all very relaxed and enjoyable and I can just about remember stopping the railcar on the running line, opposite a remote pub, and leaving it there whilst the driver and we two students went inside for some lunch!

Frustratingly, it was 'not the done thing' to take photos on the training course and my brain cells are rapidly diminishing, but I think it was only on part of the OHE system that the extra trailer was required, hence this shot from later the same year seems to show it running without.

Re:Who needs Friends like these.

How v odd.
Fantastic modelling BTW
How does it avoid 'falling over' when not attached to the railcar?

Re:Who needs Friends like these.

Probably the castors either side of the axle. I would imagine weight distribution would be an issue too.
Grand models

Re:Who needs Friends like these.

Easier to reverse than most box trailers.
Like it muchly:thumbup:

Re:Who needs Friends like these.

The little wheels hang down and are locked into place. Recently in the Utrecht Rail Museum they had one on the back of a tram loco. It also had attachment points for more than one trailer too.

Re:Who needs Friends like these.

Imagine an entire layout of hand made models like these. Spoilt for choice!! :D:D

Nicely done - unusual models are always a plus, especially very high quality ones like these.

love it , :rolf::rolf::rolf:

Re:Who needs Friends like these.

Absolutely marvellous stuff and great modelling too...
I seem to recall seeing pics of trams towing similar trailers with pneumatic tyres....

Re:Who needs Friends like these.

An interesting trailer and well modelled. I wonder how it would fair (in the 12" to 1' world) if the railbus reversed?

Trev. A pic of a Bradford tram limbering up for the recruitment drive for the great slaughter.

Re:Who needs Friends like these.

Love the 2 wheel trailer. Now I know what to do with that spare single Axle that has Roller Bearings. The French NG Railways made quite extensive use of single axle Trailers. Mostly Vans as I seam to recall from memory.

Re:Who needs Friends like these.

Very nice! I wonder if any of the Irish NG railways ran single axle trailers behind their railcars

Re:Who needs Friends like these.

To the best of my knowledge none of the Irish NG Lines had single axle Trailers. Though I do stand to be corrected with some hard evidence.

Re:Who needs Friends like these.

Sounds like the next project- a single axle van. Wonder if he is up to it!:D

Re:Who needs Friends like these.

I have to say that I am tempted, but depends on the weather for in door projects. If the weather stays dry and not too much snow or frost, then the Garden Railway will take priority. But a small 2 wheel van for my Pig Nose to drag around. Mmmm loverly.

This was taken a few years ago in France. It is of a trailer behind a railcar. Filmed from trailer in second part of movie.

I remember it well. Had toothache - French dentist in Ambert sorted it - much, much cheaper than UK!!!!!!!!

... some of the Swiss rural trolleybus lines also had single axle trailers (favourite was the Steffisburg-Thun Interlaken, which also had passenger and mail trailers, albeit 2 axle - quite a little train of trolley vehicles..)
