Using 9 Volt Batteries

Have any of you, who run battery power, used 9 volt batteries to power your locomotives ? I recently installed a "Pocket Railboss" module into one of my Bachmann Davenports and was thinking of powering it with two 9 volt lithium batteries. Any thoughts ?

Series or parallel on the batteries?
Are you thinking of a 'standard' package battery, or something more exotic?
What is the charge density (or mA-hour rating) of your suggested batteries?

If you put them in parallel, you may well find as the charge/voltage drops-off, the loco ends up running too slowly too quickly..
If you put them in series, you might be limited by the current you can draw. - If (say) using a small standard package battery.

Tried that, running time is is not good

I was thinking of using the new Lithium based 9 volt batteries. Supposed to last ten times longer than the standard alkaline variety. They are not rechargeable, so it may not be worth it $$$wise.

Wiring batteries in parallel can cause problems. If one battery is in worse condition than the other, the better one will continually try to recharge the dud one. This kills off the better battery and can create a large amount of heat.

My plan was to wire them in series.

9 V batteries don't have enough mAh compared to NiMH batteries. So running time may not be that good.

The only use I have for PP9 nine vot batteries is in the tender of Bachmann ten wheelers. They last a long while as they operate the sound board.

Yea, I've scrapped the idea. I'm waiting for a Blue Chinese Li-on battery to come in the mail. It's a 12 volt job, small enough to fit in the cab. I would have placed it under the hood, but that space is occupied by the G Scale Graphics electronics.
