I passed Wuppertal on the train from Berlin to Cologne this summer, the monorail looked extremely interesting, I wish I'd been able to get off and have a good look. I'm assuming it is still in operation?

Oh yes - it is! They developed a partnership to the Shonan monorail in Japan

Indeed it is. I'm going to stop and take a look on my way back from Rügen later this year. The Schwebebahn has been on my wish to visit list since I was a boy. They have the Kaiserwagen running on the morning I am there so hope to get some photos of that.

Ref the recent postings about Berlin, I was there recently for a few hours and took the opportunity to see the usual sights (Reichstag, Brandenburg Gate, Checkpoint Charlie) and travel on U-bahn and tram, picture below.

FYI some German city hotels (I stayed at the Intercity) will give you a free travel pass if you ask for it which covers U-bahn, buses and trams. At Wuppertal (see another thread) that includes the Schwebebahn!

Not the best of images I am afraid, but this screen grab was seen in a WW2 Vid of the Med War. Somewhere in Greece a truck dragging a Tram Trailer. Presumably there was no Electricity or the wires were down, novel way of dealing with the problem. Presumably also there were no Steam Locomotives that could do the job? Interesting to relicate on a bit of Tram Road using a Remote Controlled Truck.

A travel advisory: Next time visit these trams in the south east of Berlin:

Schöneiche - Rüdersdorf (1.000 mm) - build in 1910, extended in 1977, now 14 km long
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TDqsIwx0BF4

Strassenbahn Rahnsdorf - Woltersdorf (1.435 mm) – build in 1913, only 5,6 km long, steep gradient of 6,7% (!)

I cannot tell you which one is faster, my favorite is Woltersdorf.

Without doubt my favourite was the one with the 4 wheeled old iron. Though both are superb lines in their own way.

Have recently been faffing around with my N Kato Unitram and begining to like it for a bit of indoor playtime. Just bought some points for it and considering joining up to another set if I can get one at a good price.

Anyone got a Unitram set they would like to unload?

Could perhaps swop for something LGB. Maybe a G Scale Tram if that would work!

I rather like the look of this layout as a possibility if I can get that second Unitram Set.

Hi,

Yes there are some hidden tram fanciers out there.

I bought a Bachmann Closed Street car some time ago and run it around my track occasionally 'for something completely different' in between running my other 'normal' railway stock. It was second hand and needed a new motor block which rendered it an overall expensive purchase but I still have it and run it occasionally.

I also have an HLW Interurban Pacific Electric which again was second hand and has been converted to battery power with a home made r/c unit which is now in version 3 and still under trials but seems to work ok. See attached picture of it running a few years ago [2014] on the unpowered G1 track [now being considerably extended and changed] at the Hornsby Model Engineers site in Galston NSW. [we run 5" gauge ground level there, see www.hme.org.au].

I have recently purchased a LGB 233360 set and use it for the same purpose as the Bachmann unit and enjoy seeing it running around in the evening all lit up on my temporary home track outside my bedroom and viewable from my kitchen window as well, [daylight picture below] so much so that I am waiting to receive a second hand LGB 3500B trailer from grootspoor to include it [somewhat un prototypically] with the set.

20180719_112807.jpg

The trams I have do provide me with a different aspect to the hobby and I use them as I said to provide a counterpoint to the standard trains I run at other times.

Wishing you all an early xmas greeting and a heartfelt 'bah humbug' from down under.

I have recently as described before been faffing about with my N Gauge Kato Unitram set. I today remembered a German book that I bought a long time ago, well worth hunting out as there is much information about Overhead Construction and Street Track. Though for HO the methods would work quite well for our scale as well.

It also describes (in German) the building of a delightful small Tramway in HO with SG and Metre Gauge parts included. The complete layout if built all with G Track and R1 Configuration would make a superb smallish Garden Line with lots of interesting Ooerating Potential.
