Stainz vs Kof diesel - comparison

After running LGB Stainz and Kof diesel side b see for few days here is my observation.

My Stainz weighs 1375 g while .Kof weighs 2200 g. This makes Kof a great hauler.
Unless I add more weight to Stainz, it occasionally struggles to pull 5 Playmobil wagons. Kof had no such issue.

Stainz frequently stalls on my track unless I clean it immediately prior to running. Whenever it stalls I had to nudget it ti get moving. But under same condition, the Kof rarely stalls. This is surprising as Kof has only one extra axle.

Kof can be run at very low speed. Its top speed is good too. Stainz can't run hat slow especially when it is hauling wagons.

My Stainz is basic version so lacks rear socket, smoke etc.

Stainz's light brightness varies with speed and both front and rear lights are always on. Kof has directional lights and intensity remains same at a speed. I guess this is due to having DCC decoder in Kof.

Kof has a engine driver seating on left. However, it looks smaller than Playmobil figures. I expected LGB figures to be of same size of Playmobil's.

Kof has opening doors and sun visors!

I was very frustrated with track power when I had just Stainz as my sole trader powered loco. While Kof didn't inspire me to love track power, at least it is less frustrating compared to Stainz.

Overall, I like the Kof better.

Kof is a term referring to small shunting locos so it is difficult to assess your findings unless you tell us which loco you refer to.

Re LGB & Playmobil figures it has to be remembered that the Playmobi brand is basically intended for the 'toy' market so there is no reason for their figures to be made to a particular scale and hence their size is unlkely to match that of LGB figures.

That's surprising. My Stainz locos all do well. Even when I had track power they would be one of my better runners. I also have the
0-6-0 diesel you mentioned and it too does well. If it's the same one you're speaking of it's this one,

As good a quality as older analogue LGB Stainz locos are, they do wear out.
My guess would be worn motor brushes, or perhaps worn pick ups, or perhaps both.

I believe that the type Mobi bought is this one, following recommendations that it would have a fair amount of internal space for later fitting of battery power....

I've always felt that the seated driver used in these models (and several other LGB diesels) is a little on the small side for a G figure - but as the "true" scale of G is never really certain (another whole argument there, of course), it's a bit of a moot point.

Mobi, it sounds like the pickups on your Stainz needs checking over. It really shouldn't be stalling any more than the diesel, though the latter has a longer wheelbase and more weight which can help.

Do the middle wheels of the 0-6-0 chassis pick up power? - I don't know, never checked that on my US loco with the same chassis.

I find all my Playmobil wagons have a lot of drag due to the long wheelbase, their simple bearings and the tendency for the articulated axles to run out-of-true. More so than the LGB wagons of similar length.

If that is the one Mobi has, then they do pull exceptionally well. Even better than Stainz locos.

The German/Austrian 0-6-0 collect power from all 6 wheels + Skids, I believe the USA outline ones do the same although it is so long since i owned one I cannot remember!!

I dont think the chassis on the 2 above mentioned are exactly the same though. The USA ones weigh 800 grammes more than the Austrian/German one and the overall length is approx 25 longer as well, they do not have the dummy Jack shaft drive either.

Mobi's USA Outlined Kof did indeed have a short run on the Dunnyreichesbahn last week. Certainly a good runner, but on DCC a bit lively as the Chip has not been 'Got At'.

Mobi, do you remember how I showed you the check that all Wheels and Skates are connected to each other on one side of the Loco? Worth a go with that on your Stainze.
