Having resurrected and repaired my freelance vans (for James to pull), I thought it needed a brake van.

Here's the most complete van of the set ....

They were intended to be narrow-gauge to run behind a steeple-cab loco (which they did before being laid aside). I made a fifth frame with the intention of making something else and this has been gathering dust also for six years .....

When casting a replacement axle guard I noticed the mould had passed its sell-by date (all the little detail undercuts and such had broken away) so I thought I'd cast a few more pieces before melting the mould down for something else ....

The van is similar to a LMS type although a bit shorter. I cut the required pieces from 1.5mm Birch ply and scribed the planking on it.....

Miserable weather at the moment so the shed will wait 'till tomorrow:rolf:

cool! very crisp lines

Thanks for your comments all. It is a rush job - needed for Sunday - and it was a spur of the moment decision. Get a bit further today (I hope).

Well got a bit further this morning .......

No rattle cans left, so used ordinary red oxide primer - it might stay this colour unlesss I mix some brown up. Interior to paint and glaze. Duckets are solid - will need to represent windows..,..

Roof will be made up of card (laminated). Steps, footboards, handrails to make and fit.
Wheels and hook & loop couplings also to add.

Well thanks for your reassurances chaps! Done a bit more this afternoon ....

Made all twelve handrails and painted them .....

As I cannot remember what else there should be inside (apart from brake?) I'm leaving it out:rolf: Its only meant to look like a brake van anyway:rolf:

fantastic build!

A guard!

That's ace, looks very much like a brake van to me. Nicely narrowgaugeified while keeping the look of the prototype.

a bench seat.
Looking brilliant. Nice bit of work.

Thanks all for your comments. Cheers Alan - get it (or something of that ilk) in this morning - the roof goes on today!

How far do you want to go? A bench seat, possibly on top of a storage box; A coal box for the stove; what about a coat hanging on a hook, and perhaps a flap down desk for doing the paperwork (?) and of course a brake-wheel and guard!

It's looking very good.

Hi Giles - thanks:thumbup: Funnily enough ....

I made a hat (on the seat top) to go with a coat but the latter didn't look right. Forgot about the coal - too late now as I have glued the roof on! Doh!

Well got the roof finished (painted off-white), and fixed the handrails. Not perfectly aligned but I'm leaving it as is......

Still plenty to do - brake pipes, lamp brackets, lettering (maybe), then running gear, ballast block, steps, footboards, and couplings .... Oh - and stove pipe:rolf:

Got a bit more done (after tea last night - lamp brackets and brake pipes), waiting for paint to harden ...
