Silly bids Shameless Plug

Have to agree that I'm one of the crowd that will put a bid in on something so it pops up in my bid list later - even if I know its going to get outbid as a means of keeping track of stuff as i trawl ebay. I think once or twice I've even got things for £10-15.

If you are looking for a bargain due to a recent change in the ebay system it is actually better to place a low bid rather than put it in your watch list. Ebay now share items from your watch list with other people who are watching similar items, so if you have found an item listed in the wrong section or badly described where before you may of been the only person to notice it you will share it with everyone else who regularly buys the same similar items to you.

Can anyone explain why some bidders put multiple bids on when there is no one to bid against. I was watching one item last week which had 8 bids on it, all from the same bidder & was still on the minimum bid. Looking at the bids it seemed that a bid was added almost daily.
The bidder still put on 2 more bids to get the item. I'm sure the other bids were just to see what he had bid as he paid 3 times what a similar item went for several days later.

I can only think someone had put a high bid in to start (but it would only show up as the lowest bid) and your chap kept putting in bids until he reached that higher bid other than that i havnt a clue

8 bids, 1 bidder. Pointless & expensive to the bidder.

If you increase your maximum bid it gets recorded as another bid without actually increasing the current bid value. Maybe this chap was simply revising his maximum?

If there is a reserve people will keep upping their bids sometimes to see if it a sensible amount. I guess also if people are placing advance bids they may think their 1st bid is too low and place a higher one.

EvilBuy invites you to place your maximum bid.
If this is greater than the start bid, only the lower price shows up.
If someone else bids, in between those amounts, your bid is adjusted to beat the later one.
So it will show as another bid, although you've not done anything.
The intermediate bid will not show up.
This continues until your max bid is beaten.

It's a sort of bullying tactic that sometimes works. If you put multiple bids in, especially if there are more than one of the item up for auction (not necessarily from the same seller), others look at the other auctions instead. If the multi bidder is clever, he/she can also draw bids from others who think they can bid him/her up to his/her maximum but end up being the highest bidder themselves. The multi bidder can then bid on one of the other items having eliminated one of the competition. Doesn't always work but it has worked for me quite a few times.
