The loco is a Denver & Salt Lake RR 2 6 6 Mallett, which was one of the first built in the USA. Needlesws to say the DSL nver reached Salt lake, and was bought out by The D&RG
This railroad wnet over the Rockies at 110000+ feet at Rollins pass, with the usual mayhem in winter and enormous costs entailed in attempting to combat the ice/snow/and wind.
Eventually after much money raising the Moffatt Tunnel replaced the 'high line'. That of course is still in use, and just as important is the not often mentioned water tunnel for Denver that is also there, and where a lot of the money came from!

Look especially at Barry Bogg's site, at http://www.cumberlandmodelengineering.com/BogsSteamLocomotives.html where there is a huge D&RG mallett loco, of Class L131 - that is a 2 8 8 2.
