Yes, Nick Owen is a cult figure in Ruritania, like Norman Wisdom was in Albania. We are not so much interested in Suzanne, but weatherperson Shefali Oza is hugely popular with Prince Rudolf. Her name means "warm front" in Old Ruritanian.

As for Crossroads, this is a "reality TV" documentary of a motel based in your picturesque tourist resort of Bromyard, is it not?

AKA Bennyville. :rolf::rolf::rolf::rolf:

You can't call it Bennyville any more due to political correctness. It's now known in slang as Stillton, cos

WAIT FOR IT.....

they're "still Bennies". :rolf:

The track to complete the loop arrived as expected this morning and was immediately put to use. The "puzzle yard" end of the layout now looks like this:

Building a layout in a room already fitted out with kit means some challenges. First, ensure that some cutouts are made to get to the existing wall sockets and - vitally - ensure there is easy access to the [strike]booze cupboard[/strike] fridge.

Clearances are tight in a few places, but good enough:

Having gone round the walls, time to make a first pass at the all important bridge piece. Note the absence of bracing timber underneath, pending a few checks on alignment (i.e. bodging the saw cuts!):

Looking splendid Peter!
Will you be using drop in track bridge brackets or swing up brackets for the bridge?

Anyone look at that last picture and think something wasn't quite right? Well, you're spot on. As is traditional at this point I (re)discovered that the floor isn't level and the nicely aligned kitchen units drop 20mm as they follow the floor. Put a spirit level on the bridge section and you see this:

That's exactly a 2% (1 in 50) fall on the bridge. I decided that I could live with it - mainly as I couldn't figure out what else to do about it! So here's the braced bridge. The near end will eventually get hinges fitted so the bridge can be permanently in place, but capable of being swung out of the way for easy access to the room:

Power to the bridge is supplied very simply by connectors (LGB rail joiners sawn in half) on both rails at both ends of the bridge. Obviously these also ensure that the line is in alignment. Pat and Mike make some finishing touches prior to the grand opening.

After a brief, yet moving ceremony at Zenda depot, the first train operated round the new line. In keeping with an ages old tradition, the train was hauled by veteran Stainz class locomotives 6 and 7. Prince Rudolf naturally broke into his busy schedule to break a bottle of fine Ruritanian champagne over a ceremonial golden rail clamp.

The special train stopped on the new bridge for Ruritania's national dish of black pudding with pork scratchings in a curry sauce to be served. Lashings of ginger beer were also available of course.

Another great day for Ruritanian Railways!

Will this stay un-scenic Peter or are you going to add some ballast? :)

Ah well done. I was wondering who'd be the first to notice that the invisible ballast hadn't been laid in the first photos. As you'll notice, ballast had been put down by the time Prince Rudolf opened the line.

There are no plans for scenery: the idea is to put any scenics on the original wide boards that form Zenda depot. You'll notice some lights and a water crane have already sprouted and Mel has very generously built a coaling stage for me (not in shot).

It's now showing the ever-popular "Manchester Victoria via Moston" option. Something from my youthful past. Yes, it is a very old destination blind!

Will this be your fettlin' room as well or do you also have other railway property for maintenance?

Yes, this is the maintenance centre for Ruritanian Railways. This is my room though Mrs W keeps trying to get me to store rubbish in there like soft furnishings. Apart from my study (all 8 by 6 of it), the rest of the house is full of female tat. To put that in context, there are two large shoe racks in our kitchen/ utility room. My occupancy is precisely three pairs of shoes (and no, I don't have ginormous feet!)

Good luck with your campaign for an indoor land grab! I'm only 2 hours from Peterborough if you feel like a visit.

Do you want a lodger?

Yes, but Shefali threatened me with an ASBO the last time I asked... :crying:

Maintenance workers today completed work on the new lifting bridge across the Zenda gorge. The sophisticated pivoting equipment is technically known as "hinges on 2 by 1". Having ascended from Zenda station, the Wednesdays Only parcels train (with passenger accommodation) from the border was the first train to cross the completed structure.

The bridge was then ceremonially raised for the first time. The structure has a beauty all of its own.

The train is shown at Zenda depot, awaiting disposal of the stock. Some of the various features which make the indoor section of Ruritanian Railways a pleasing place to be can be seen.

Excellent stuff Peter.
Mind you Zender to Shaw via Oldham stretches the imagination a little! :rolf:
So that beggs the question......

Which is the best way to Oldham.........

Straight up the A62 works for me. Just remember to get your flotation shoes out between Hoek van Holland and Harwich
