Ruritanian Railways - Indoor Section

With the water crane, if it is going to be fixed, I found that heat shrink is useful for the hose that hangs from the end of the pipe.

Cheap as chips but rock solid, so no 'playability', but looks like a hose as it shrinks unevenly. Mine is on 8mm copper pipe, and is from ebay. 14mm heatshrink used for radio controlled circuit protection, but they all look good.

Good tip. Thanks!

After the long summer days and much enjoyable running, focus has shifted back to the indoor section established last winter. I had sworn to myself (and Mrs W) that I would not attempt a continuous run. However, I am weak. Very weak in fact when GSCer Mez tempts me with his spare track and I still have a load of R1 curves left, even after selling off almost all my surplus bits & pieces.....

Having pondered long and hard (and begged permission off Mrs W), today saw a trip to a wood merchant.

The basic plan is to establish a single track continuous run along a narrow 200mm (8") shelf around the walls in the picture with a bridge piece roughly where I'm standing. No points or scenery: just a simple loop of track so I can sit in the warmth and watch a train trundle around as the rain pours down.

The boards' width is small so that the worktop is still usable. One piece of luck is that the existing boards' height means the new construction has to be 70mm above the worktop which gives decent room to stash bits and pieces out of sight underneath the new track. With help from Mrs W (what a woman! ), the first boards have been sawn and put in place. Track now awaited from deepest Oxfordshire...

That looks great Peter, wish I had room for an indoor layout here, at least you can run trains when the weathers naff like it has been today..:thumbup:

Smart. Only needs 2 more things - the bed and connection to the garden railway. :rolf::rolf::rolf::rolf:

I seem to remember that there was a fridge full of booze in there as well :party::party:

That's why the fridge is only half-full of booze now.

Weakness does have it's advantages...............More play time.
Besides, we don't care what mamma don't allow, we're gonna play our guitar anyhow!:clap::party::party::laugh::laugh:

I still reckon that a simple siding sticking out from the indoor section could be all that you need, then get Dave H to drive the train .................... he'd be able to jump the rest.:thumbup:

A few more pictures from last night. First a reminder of how the loco shed end of the layout looked. Pat and Mike loosen track bolts before the line is lifted.
Yes, that is BBC Midlands news' "dream team" of Suzanne Virdee and "uncle" Nick Owen on the telly.

Now the new curve goes in. The bridge piece will soar majestically from the end of this. At least it will when I can figure out how to make everything work! One of the joys of grafting something new onto an existing layout is the amount of butchery and "fiddle factor" required to both woodwork and track. The end board will need an additional leg adding to support the new bridge and drastic trimming to let the bridge piece meet up. Two of the baseboards are now in their fourth Doctor Who like regeneration having been used variously over the last 20 years for an N gauge American layout, a (very small) G scale indoor line and OO gauge before this layout.

Obviously a problem with the satellite dish settings!

It looks just great Peter. I showed my good lady this and she said "very nice....you have the garage". So, lovely warm running will be a distant dream. Even before I opened my mouth to mention a possibility of using the 2nd garage conversion, that I completed last year, the look appeared that only women can do, that tells any man that lots of thin ice and skating was happening.............
