image.jpeg This is my next job just starting. I purchased this fine locomotive from our member Terry Soham who has gone over to the dark side of N Gauge leaving Garden Railways behind completely so I gather. Though I think he was also into N gauge at the same time as working in the Garden. A few of us will have come away with his offerings via the Forum and mine was the above pictured Funkey a rather nice Scratch Built job.

It features Working Couplings, Directional LED Lighting in the Roof, Cab Ends and even the Radiator Compartment. Also I believe a Brian Jones Sound Card. Very well built mostly out of Plastic Card this is a well thought out and superbly built machine bursting with internal Tech Goodies that are all all plug connected for easy easy removal and revisions. Bogies appear to be USA Trains or suchlike and the running is superb. Scalewise it appears to be on the 16mm side but fits in nicely for size and the Drivers appear to be our scale. Perhaps Terry was using a ruler that made his creation fit in with LGB Stock, though to be fair most 2ft Gauge prototypes when built in 16mm Scale fit in nicely for size with LGB Stock.

There were a few things that I was not 100% happy with:-
- Blue Livery National Power (what appears to be Terry's take in this) did not fit in with my Harz themed Colours
- Nicad Batteries (probably the best tech of the day when built)
- Planet T5 Radio Control, I have made no secret of my dislike of these type of RC's. But again this was a personal dislike and no reflection upon Terry's superb work.

So Terry if you are reading this TIME TO LOOK AWAY!

First job is to remove what I could of the Lining and Lettering. The lining appeared to be some sort of fine Tape and is easily removed using a Fibre Pencil and fine Emery for the more reluctant bits. Some parts are pretty well unremovable due to location behind Handrails so hopefully the new livery and undercoat will cover this nicely. The Larger EWH lettering was some kind of Paper that was well stuck in place, shaving off with a new Scalpel Blade sorted that out. Smaller lettering and the 02 numbers appeared to be Letraset and the Fibre Pen made short work of these as well. A little tidy in place with more Wet and Dry and things look to be near ready for Masking up.

BElow showing the Centre Section removed and partial removal of the Paper EWH.image.jpeg
Centre section ready for undercoat, note the difficuot to do parts and some places where the underlying White Plastic has been revealed.

One Cab end unplugged to do the work, also a view of some of the inside Tech.

That is far as I can go at the moment, more Tamiya Masking Tape will be aquired this weekend to carry on the job. Though those Windows will take some clever masking to keep them as clear as they are now.

Another interesting project Jon. I will watch your progress with interest.

John, wow we certainly can learn something new every day. On my list to buy at the Show this weekend.

To all you guys out there watch this vid all the way through, the Rusting possibilities with this have to be seen to be believed. Up to now I have on occasion used the Salt method, but this stuff is another Tool in the armory.

Looking good Jon. Is it going in Harz sand livery.

No that is mostly for Shunters and a bit too Modern for me, going to be like the Kamels to fit in with my other Dismals. Well except for my couple of Shunters which are DR Black.

Having got some different kind of Liquid Masking at the Biggleswade Show on Saturday a start has been made on the actual repaint. Vallejo is the stuff I could get. Tried it out on the Windows and no damage occured so a full masking was done yesterday and today. Only issue for me is that it dries clear so a bit tricky to see what has been done. You can see some of the Green as it is when first applied on the edge of the windows. I will get some Maskol next time when this is used up. Various other Masking kit in view as well all will be used in apropriate places. The various parts have all been separated as Terry has done a great job of making everything unplugable for dismantling.image.jpeg
All signs of Blue and Grey now gone. Chassis is Black drying after masking tape taken off to protect the Plugs etc. you can see right and left the Point type if Magnets that work the auto uncoupling system. Below the chassis can be seen the centre section with its first coat of Halford's BMW "Imola Red 11" for the Harz based colour scheme, other parts still in Halford's Rattle Can undercoat "Red Primer".image.jpeg
Now getting low on Halfords Matt Black, Red Primer and the BMW Imola may not go the distance so I can see an X5 trip to Halfords at Cambridge comming up soon.

Another day another lot of Masking. Or all covered up and nowhere to go!image.jpegI was about to do the White Lines thinking that the last time I did it I used White Tape. How wrong can you be relying in memory? Was all done with a spray of Matt White on my other repaints. Dooooh. So some more masking to sort it out, this will not go too well on the Spray as I forsee some overspray. But that will be sorted easily I hope!

In Aust some of the modellers I have spoken to at work use "Vegemite" instead of salt for masking and chipping effects.
It is water soluble and can be used straight from the bottle without any mixing.
I suppose "Marmite" would do the same thing.
Haven't tried it myself yet but I am keeping it in the memory bank for future experimentation

Interesting but as I am one of the Marmite haters it would never even get a place in my House even for such a useful purpose, cant stand the smell of it and hate the stuff. Que thread drift on the subject of Marmite!

Back to Funkey. Having done all that Masking and spraying the white I realised that the Cab white line was lower then the centre body. I forgot that the cabs sit in a slot in the underframe to keep them in place, drat n double draft. Restart this morning with a rub down and the centre section is now all red undercoat again!

Maybe we should do a Marmite poll?

Put me down as a hater too.... :lipssealed:

"Yeast sludge" is a delightfully accurate description.
If you ever have a brewery tour, they will show you the fermentation bit and then happily tell you that they can actually sell the waste muck bubbling up to the Marmite factory!

'Men at Work' wasn't it who sang about a vegemite sandwich - first we ever heard of it.

As for Marmite - I'm ambivalent ;););)

...........which means I can eat a sandwich with either hand :emo::emo:

'Men at work'??

How did it go?
"Do you come from a land down-under?"
"Don't eat Vegamite! It will make you chunder!"
:rofl::rofl::rofl:
