Rail Plant Vehicles

I wanted to recreate the Road-Rail vehicles I've seen being used local to me over recent times.

Most of you will have already seen my excavator which was bashed from a blue Bruder/LGB digger.

I had some Brandbright wheels going spare, and these were used with some 3 mm and 5 mm plasticard offcuts to knock up something like the ones I've seen, both on the railway and at a recently close contractor's yard....

I had another set of Brandbright wheels going spare, and I wanted to make another of these vehicles. I looked at a few candidates as a donor from Dickies/Toyzone, including a Mercedes Atego truck with Hi-ab crane that I have, but I eventually decided on bashing the Bruder/LGB green Unimog that you see in the LGB freight sets.

Most of the bash was sraying the polypropolene plastic with a suitable yellow colour paint. I used Halfords enamal spray primer and 'Machine Yellow' but this was too pale, so I sprayed it again with some Tamiya yellow, which looked like a very close match to the JCB models I'd seen in my model shop where I purchased it.

Polypropolene doesn't take paint too well as it is very waxy, but the Halfords primer helped. Next time though, I would use the Tamiya paint designed for R/C car body shells.

I have resprayed the Road-Rail Excavator as well, as the original acrylic paint had come adift due to being left outside all winter. A Bruder/LGB front end shovel loader was painted at the same time. I also had a Modelzone digger where the caterpillar tracks had perished, so I discarded the chassis, and mounted it on a HLW wagon that I'd been previously using as a shunter's match truck.

Not true scale models I know, but they pass the 6 ft rule. They are not motorised, but are just for stabling on the PW siding. However, I might try to motorise a Motorzone Unimog as a future project.

Looks really good Gizzy - took a few pic's of one near here a few
weeks ago, with a vague notion to build something similar

Was intrigued by the ramps that had been installed to make
access on and off the track easier, might try a copy if i ever
find an excavator to bash

Funnily enough, I followed a 6 wheeled Volvo truck of the A14 when I was heading home from a late shift on Friday night, similar to the one in this youtube clip;

It headed up to the yard behind the railway station, so I guess it was in use during the weekend.

Ah working on one too

Got a load of rc bits and it's hopefully going to be able to drive on and lower the rail wheels then pootle off

Smart work Gizzy, I love the Modelzone bash and I've got one skulking somewhere. I also notice that, true to the prototype, the hooligans have been round and smashed all the windscreens

Nope it's not a kit it's a hack up a kids toy effort too
It was too flexible so I encouraged a brass sub frame in using drills and files!

It's stalled at the moment but I've sorted out the parts I need and just need some time to get going again. The silver wheel grips are 3.5mm jack couplers pulled in half, and only use the longer half, and are a snug fit on the GRS wheels.

The Unimog is a Bruder/LGB one Puggymate, made of polypropolene.

Not quite so, ahem, toylike now, and I will fit a new front windscreen at some point....

Jack couplers for wheel grips? Great piece of lateral thinking there!
