cant bring the railway to school so I bring school kids to thre railway :thumbup:

thats me on teh far right.

on the subject of track I use R1 on all my points and sidngs and the mainline is all R2, perfect for live steamers.
 
Quarry Curve Junction.

All built using R1 curves and point, although some curves were 're-radiused' as R2....
 
once again, all r1/r2, but considering we only have a small-ish garden, we wouldn't ever wan't to run anything huge :)

Having visited Lazy Grange Bay in my opinion the use of R1s does not detract at all from the overall effect- and in fact I think if Mike had restricted him to R3 then the result would be a.) dull and b.) not look half as good. The same is true for the WGLR, except more so as without R1 there wouldn't be a WGLR! Just two examples.

If you have room for a decent layout with an R3 minimum, go for it. If you don't, then there are several excellent railways on here that prove it's far from a big issue.

Well, Sir - I don't exactly know what an 'Accy' steam Shay is, but my AccuCraft three-cyinder version sure manages my B-i-L's rather tighter curves, and I have many videos to prove it.

PS - you'll need to put a chamfer around the log-ends to avoid them digging in when hauling on the yarder ; )

Not helped by the Fat Controller trampling the garden to clean the track :cool:

the 2-10-2 has only a tiny bit of over hang on r1 mike :D :nail:
 
It is all a question of compromises, and that is purely subjective, and Rule 8 rules :D

If, for me, it were a quesion of R1s or no railway, the answer would be R1 - simples :thumbup: and then I'd have to select my stock for things that I thought were suitable.

But, as Brian the Snail said, don't knock it, there are some fantastic garden railways that have been built with R1s.

My aim, was to have a train wandering through my garden, weaving in and out of the shrubs :wave: and while I may have been able to use more generous curves, I don't have sidings, or yards, or lots of detailed structures.

On the other hand, if you look at Spike's garden railway, he's covered his garden with long sweeping tracks :D :D

It just proves that this hobby has something for everyone :applause: :applause: :applause:
 
When space is at a premium the R1 rerally comes in handy. The indoor test track at Fundenhall is sqeezed into a small 6x14 box room with entry to the room under the track.
 
My 'works room' at home is even smaller at only 6x10 and until now only had two straight test tracks. However a start was made yesterday on making a prermanant test circuit ( that's the excuse, but of course it will really be an indoor winter ruuning track for the smaller stuff as well ). Until now I have never even owned one section of R1 track, but nothing else will fit, so last Saturday a visit to the Great Eastern model shop in Norwich transpired (who are unfortunately going to stop stocking G scale in 2010 due to lack of interest and low sales) for the curves. The R1 points are on order from Dragon G Scale along with a two road engine shed. At present the track is laid out on the floor but it will be raised when the final plan is finalised. It is to be a simple circiut with a three road siding on the side oppsite the desk.
 
Hooray for R1s then.
The sidings will be behind the current parked stock...all in the workshop for one reason or another !

A SMALL 6x14 room!!! That's almost the same size as my backyard!!! You're lucky...when I were a lad there were fourteen of us and the chickens living in an old pie dish...we were so poor we couldn't even afford to be poverty-stricken. Every monday my dad used to carve a bit off his wooden leg and we'd make it into a clothe-peg to sell to the gypsies. After a couple of months he didn't have a leg to stand on.

When I said ROOM I really meant a small hole in the ground covered with tarpalin and to keep it clean I had to get up every morning at 10 o'clock at night, half an hour before I went to bed, then work at mill for 29 hours a day AND pay the mill owner to come to work.
You tell that to the youngsters of today and they wont believe you.
 
Well of course, there were 150 of us living in a hole in the road ....................

Anyhoo, latest news from the WGLR is that plans are afoot to make major changes to the garden which will see some existing bits of the railway disappearing .......... BUT a longer railway will replace them AND a box full of r2 curves may well be required ;) .

Anyway, back to the R1 theme. My new R1 points from Dragon G Scale arrived this morning, less than 24 hours from ordering. You really cant beat Jeremy for service and very pleasant to chat to on the phone as well. I now have a some sidings and a very large box of plastic bits, with a picture of a loco shed on the outside. Once all is in place and Im happy with it, then a proper base will be constructed about 3 feet of the ground and then scenery added. This all started as a chance remark and now I have a winter project, and all made possible by the humble R1 curve !
