Working indoors I have to use some R1, notably the points. With my latest plan I've tried to use R2, and even one R3, as transition curves and have only gone down to R1 where absolutely necessary. Having said that all my locomotives are 0-4-0s and I have shortened my US-style freight cars to around 22-25 scale feet in length (around 12 actual inches) with passenger vehicles only a fraction longer, so it all tends to look in proportion even when on the sharp curves.

I started all with Rad 1`s,and have replaced nearly all of them with Rad 2`s.,thanks to the genorosity of a member of gsm. All my points are rad1`s however,.....You know,i have had quite a few visitors over, and some of them bring big locos, and they have pretty well all gone round my line.Yes,i`d love to have a huge wide garden and have lovely long smooth curves, but it isn`t going to happen. As was mentioned above, most importantly, having Rad 1 Curves alone should not detract from your layout, and although i have not seen it in the flesh,so to speak...Mels Layouit ...also mentioned above...looks absolutely fantastic from the pictures i have seen on the forums.

Long Live Radius 1 is what i say !!

47King says that all Roundhouse Locos go round r1. This is good news if one fine day I can afford one of the high end locos. However when I discussed with GRS they said I was limted to Lady anne and smaller? Any thoughts?

 R1 with Feildbahn stock is 'just right'. Forget about it for American Mainline though. One thing to watch though, is the people that expouse the use of, say R2 or R3 track, but still put in R1 turnouts. The turnout thus effectively sets the minimum radius for the layout. Had a similar 'debate' with an HO club layout...there was a school that insisted that all turnouts should be No.8's, but then would allow 18" radius (tighter than the turnout) on the mainline.

erm. . I have to side with the47king on this one and not GRS. All Roundhouse engines will traverse r1 curves. Telling you that a Lady Anne is the largest you can go is utter rot. I know this from personal experience as i own a few engines from the Roundhouse range :D

Roundhouse locos do go round R1, but you really do need to be in control of the loco as they don't like doing it at speed, and will slow down considerably while going round. Accucraft locos really struggle round R1s - the small 0-4-0 freelance ones. The bigger Accucraft locos all specify a minimum radius, which is often R3 (4' radius), or even bigger.

The overhang of the VOR on RAD 1 will be huge. I've now got some R1 on my layout- points and on the rackline when built. I will always go for the max i can get away with of course. However, mine is a tram layout so in fact I like the looks of the R! points. MIn on the mainline is R3, outer loop R3 as i have a large amout of kitbuilt stock from a larger prev layout ( 600mm C&M coaches will not go around R1!) so I for one think stock and locos that can handle R1 are important.

The Accy steam Shay won't go less than R3 (8ft diameter) and didn't really like facing through an LGB R3 point.

That's why the R3 was replaced with this USAT beauty :bighug: :*
