Recently I started making bits and pieces using sheets of polystyrene widely available from model makers (Evergreen?). At £5-6 for a plain sheet, I wondered if there was a cheaper supply and popped onto a plastic supplier in town. They supplied similar material in bigger sheets. Yes they were 3 times the price but 20 times the size. Great news for a thrifty Scot! The only difference I have found so far is one side is shiny. They are only in plain sheets of varying thicknesses so has anyone found an alternative source of plastic in other profiles eg 'H' or square?

Which plastic sheet are you using? There a range of products available with different prices and names.

I assume you referring to either plasticard sheet or pvc foam board sometimes known as foamex

With foamed have a search for lazy grange bay to see what can be done

I'm using the sheets from Graupner, got in oin a local shop here in Wuppertal. When you paint them it is much better to sand them, to remove the shining surface.
For profiles I'm using:

I have also used Eileen's Emporium, Squires, EMA models and Evergreen, this is available from a wide range of stockists. It does pay to shop around.

These have all supplied styrene sheet as opposed to Foamex sheet.

Of no use to those in Scotland, I guess (not easy to post!) but for those further south wanting Styrene Sheet in larger sizes, Garden Railway Specialists offer sheets of 4'6" by 2'2", in seven thicknesses, in either black or white . . ..

This is probably similar to what I bought last week. Just so much cheaper than the Evergreen sheets which are only about 6 inches by 10 inches.. That is 20 times the size.

Good idea about sanding shiny side. I have tried to keep the shiny side to the inside of models so far.

That's a wide range of specialist parts that I will keep for future use. However, I was trying to say that there seem to be alternative suppliers of basic plastic sheets who are a lot cheaper than model suppliers. Obviously they don't have the same range of specialist profiles.. thanks. Stuart

3mm thick foamex/foam board
Rather than hijack Mike's thread, believe there is Hobbycraft near you in Dundee?

These are on offer, 5mm A1 size, Paper Covered, four sheets for £10.............they do stock other thickness and sheet sizes, something to practice on?

Ideal medium for making templates, see if the Plan will fit! Useful for making openings, for whether doors and windows fit/look right.
Internal walls to structures, infill, backfill, far to many uses to mention, no doubt other uses will spring to mind.

Whilst they are paper covered, with suitable covering of either PVA, and/ or using Plaster, Clay, Sand & Cement finish, suitably painted, will endure many years outside, even with the inclement British weather..........

Being thrifty..... keep a lookout for homes that are having Roof Line work done, often the installers are more than grateful to hand over the offcuts, saves them the hassle to dispose of them.....I have more than enough collected and stored to last me the rest of my time on this mortal coil!

PS: for those who jumped the gun, with statements of the bleeding obvious, try waiting, with a touch of courtesy until the posting is complete with the necessary information!

PPS: Suffer from a slow Internet Connection, therefore the need to save drafts and reddit in small bite size chunks is paramount!
And coupled with, took a chunk of skin of my right hand earlier in the day, which started to bleed profusely whilst typing the first draft, needed attending to!
So as the say patience is a virtue...................and as seems the norm for this Forum of late, 100 ways on negativity, but nothing positive!

Be careful a lot of foam board is NOT Foamex and not suitable outside, how do I know!!

Edit, just read the advert description “The dense foam section is sandwiched between two thin card layers” Not Foamex!!

I believe that the Hobby craft foamboard has a card facing, not plastic?

Not mentioned yet is the differences with sticking these sheets together. I have found the GRS stuff (shiny one side) is somewhat immune to some of the more available sticky stuffs like Slaters Mek-Pak and Eileen’s Butone. However GRS sell Plastruct Plastic Weld that appears to work well with the GRE Plastic as does Plastic Magic. I also find that a sanding to clear the shine off with WetnDry helps the glues bond better. The evergreen and plasticard products must be a different type of plastic possibly attracting the higher costs?

It would seem we posted at the same time, as that is what the description says :)
So here is my problem with 'Foamex' products. Even the more experienced model makers argue about the products. When I look at Mike's models, the material looks like thick softish plastic which he can scribe on, stick together and use outside. That is what i am looking for. Stuart

They are, ordinary hand saw can be used to cut them, a useful tool is made by Tamiya,
has a curved blade ideal for scoring though the plastic outer layer, normal craft knife will easily cut through the core of the sheet.

For assembly.

As for which one is best suited, case of try and see, all the various types have their uses, the deciding factor maybe the scale of economics of the cost and availability best suited to your locality.

I have no particular preference, just use what I have to hand at the time, the latest Christmas display, work in progress, has a Heinz 57 variety of sorts and types, and after the event, will be broken down, and be used elsewhere, on other buildings, etc, etc..........

The links shown are for reference to the items, as to where to buy, each has their own favorite preference........

The other problem is the name changes. However, Amazon does have '

White Foamex PVC Foam Sheet Cut to Size Foam Board 5mm (420 x 594mm (A2), 1). Is this the real stuff? Stuart
