Apologies if this has already been asked but what is the point of the plastic piece over the drawbar on LGB turnouts (the bar that connects to the point motor)? I've just checked a load of images of turnouts on Google and haven't found anything prototypical that matches.

Keeps the carp out of the mechanism.

I believe it is prototypical on some continental railways....

It does and doesn't. "Carp" manages to find it's way under the plastic cover. Then I have to remove the cover to properly get at the crud. So I have eliminated them.
