Piko to do new 10 coupler in G.

It is reported in the news section in the latest Gartenbahn Profi Magazine Jon

Jon,

The latest edition of Gartenbahn Profi 1/2018 mentions the new loco on Page 6.

Apologies for posting the same information as Alan
Guessed it may have been from such a source, we must wait a little while for the Cat to be online I guess.

See that Gaugemaster (as Importer) showing the 2-10-2 at £895 and the BR 103 at £595 on their website.

Top Slots and Trains showing at £699 for 2-10-2 and I have removed the BR103 price as this was for the diesel.

So, from retail, to wholesale, to realism!

Never a greedy person, I once asked a Wholesaler, what the suggested retail price was of some items I was purchasing for the shop. Back came the reply "It is not how much you can discount them for but, rather, how much you can sell them for!". That was me told.

That sounds like a line from a certain Garden Railway Purveyor of my aquaintance!

I recently did some investigation into the UK distributor/retailer pricing for LGB products with the help of a friendly G scale retailer. As an example take the latest LGB 20480 Saxon VIK loco. The LGB.com retail price is EUR 1,799 or about GBP 1,580 (using 0.88 exchange rate). The UK distributor adds about 18% to that taking the UK wholesale price to about GBP 1,860. UK retailers then sell at the price they think they can get. Some sell at the wholesale price, others discount the price, maybe 10% or more but that's on the wholesale price. The best German web retailers offer 10% off the LGB.com price, EUR 1,620 or about GBP 1,430. Even allowing for the extra shipping charges it's no wonder we buy big ticket items over the web from continental retailers. This is an extreme example and it's for LGB not PIKO but it makes the point I think.

My friendly g scale retailer tells me that there is very little room for manouver on lgb and whilst he will supply to order it is not worth stocking. Looking at the european prices somebody over here is making a lot of brass.

I wonder if it will come with a set of NG Buffers like many of the Piko Loco offerings do? If it does then a NG version crops up its head, not exact but a pretty close fit with some surgery to the Cab and Plumbing. Back when the Harz 2-6-2 was built by Krupp in 1939 (LGB and Newquid do versions) there were plans drawn up for 2 other machines, a 2-8-2 the and a 2-10-2 all for Metre Gauge. There was more MG then than now in the (at the time) reunified Germany. These drawings show a much cleaner line to all 3 Locomotives, but a clear link to the big lump that Piko is going to feast us with this year can certainly be seen, particularly note the low slung and length of the Water Tanks.

Make a nice addition to a Harz based line that already has an LGB 2-10-2 or two.

The distributor. I have always wondered why they don't can the distributor and supply direct (At least, when we were all in the same market). The mainland European market is supplied like that.

Possibly volume of sales?
Why deal with a dozen (maybe less) individual retailers who each want 'one, no three, oh sorry only one now' when you can supply ? 20 ? of an item in one hit??

The distributor model is good for the manufacturer but not for the consumer. Basically it is an import tax by another name.

My favourite retailer reckons the price he gets the lgb 20480 is set by the UK importer at a set exchange rate..leaving him no wiggle room as He knows he can buy it from America for 100s cheaper...but then..that would upset the importer

I understand that the relationship between the distributor and the old LGB goes back many years and somehow this relationship has still been retained by the new LGB.

When you realise that Gaugemaster is the distrbutor for Trix and Marklin you would have thought that, for convenience sake, Marklin would have moved the distribution of LGB stuff to Gaugemaster but, no, they kept it with the long time distributor.

When I first got into buying LGB stuff each dealer here was, I think, able to order directly from LGB but, like many other model companies, LGB wanted to get rid of this cumbersome (for them) arrangement and instead use one distributor in the UK.

But you have to factor in the carriage from the US, and then being charged 20% on the goods AND carriage, plus the 'handling fee' to collect the 20% and pass it on.
