Yes, metal wheels. 2 axles pick up power from the track, the middle axle is only driven by the (plastic) valve gear.

You're correct. Same chassis.

Early BR80 chassis had problems with the gearbox. If you have a model with completely black wheels, you might have on of those. Later models had shiny wheels and improved gearbox.
So, in case you have an old chassis with gearbox problems, the chassis will be replaced by a brand new one by PIKO.
