The motor is isolated as it's DCC ready. You may have to do clever electrical things with the PCB (I don't understand battery power, but suppose it's just that you connect the batteries to the board instead of the wheels!), but shouldn't think so.

New model
3a940c3d.jpg

Old version
14c6640a.jpg

New on the left, new domes certainly as they are subtly different.
The bodyshell appears to be a new moulding but using the old data. Things are crisper and many details are slightly finer than before, the lamp bracket, tank fillers are examples
72fb3db9.jpg

Again new on left, the cab ventilator is much slimmer.

One area where the old model is better is it has nice flat bufferbeams to mount chopper couplings. The new one has the big bracket on the front and both couplings are actually mounted on pivots behind through a slot in the bufferbeam. This will be better on sharp corners but will require a bit more work for me.

New one on right

The cab sides are virtually identical apart from finer handrails. internally the new one has a fully detailed backhead over the very basic one in the original. new one right hand side.

So overall a nice update and a far superior chassis, easy to service, dcc ready and runs very well. The body as I said before appears to be a new mould but with only slight improvements to the previously chunky details.
She looks good and for the money a good compromise between Lyn and the US locos she was derived from.
Now what number shall I change the old one to? The unused names include Sid (yes it really is a river), or I could use Axe which is used on the new L&B for their current loco.

For those interested this article contains scale drawings and the original model review in RM off John de Frayssinet's website
http://www.009.cd2.com/lynton_and_barnstaple_modelling/lyn.pdf

When compared to the drawings Lyn comes out with the chimney & cab being a little tall, the tanks a little short and the tanks are mounted higher than the original too though pretty much the right vertical height for the actual tank.  I make it approx 13% smaller than 16mm / 1:19th scale or roughly 1:22.

I bought a copy of the latest Garden Railways magazine today. The inside of the back page includes a colour advert for the Baldwin. It's interesting that the Southern liveried loco is pictured with two of the new Thomas range green six wheeled coaches. Doesn't look too bad either.:thinking:

Just a quick update on how I've been getting on with the Lyn.

a9ebff0596094cbe956c5181543498b3.jpg

I've fitted a Zimo MX632R decoder (not sound) to the loco which is working very well. It's my first Zimo, it did require some CV adjustment to get it running how I like, but that done it is working very well.

I use 16mm style chain couplings on all my British stock, so needed to make a new coupling for the rear of the loco. I basically don't run with the locos going backwards so I removed the front coupling which I found a bit ugly. As you can see the new coupling is quite wide - this is due to my Radius 1 curves causing a reasonably substantial overhang of the loco and the wide buffer prevents buffer lock.

I didn't mention it before, but the loco was mechanically quite noisy when brand new. I oiled and greased it which certainly helped a little. I remember reading on here (I think in relation to the Countess) that metal geared locos (as the new Lyn is) benefit from a bit of running in. As you can imagine this has been no great hardship and has certainly had the desired effect, it now runs very much quieter - just like my other locos.

Traction and pickup have both been superb - I still haven't had any stalling from it and it has been quite happy with all the loads I've given it so far.

On the line the loco looks the right size with my Brandbright 16mm coaches and I can't say that the incorrect proportions of the cab are bothering me at all.

So yes, I'm really happy with the Lyn.

Terry had one operating at the East Anglian show on Saturday complete with MRC sound and DCC. It was running very well and sounded good. The detailing is mostly a lot finer than the old one (I have an american version of old model) as has been posted already. It does seem to have the same problem that all two axle pick-up blocks have...pick-up when going very slowly across wide points. But a nice little loco for not too much outlay

Mike, I'm pretty sure the Lyn picks up on the front and rear bogies too, so I've got no problems running mine over R1 and R3 curves - it travels very slowly over the R3 as it leaves the station on every circuit and no stalling so far for me. I guess an R5 might be a different story, but I don't have any of those to know! As you said, particularly for the outlay, a nice little loco!

Hi James...yes I was meaning wide points like some LGB R3 points, LGB R5 and larger

I am not sure about the pilot bogie and the pony bogie being pick-up endowed either!

I'd be very surprised if the new Lyn doesn't have pickups on the front and rear bogies - my old american baldwin certainly does. Never had any stalling problems on R3 and R5 as long as the wheels are clean.

Both the old version and the new one have pick-ups on the leading and trailing trucks. Essentially it's a four axle, eight wheeled pick-up loco, with pick-ups over about double the wheelbase of say, a Stainz.

I got to see the new Lyne running and a club memebrs layout last monday. I really liked it and it ran very well. Now Im tempted to get one. Im going to wait on the new release of the 10 wheeler and see what it is priced at. Then I will decide on wich one to get.

As I said, BACHMANN BASHING!!!

No that's about right for 36 in the country. GRS are the biggest dealer by a mile and are the only one's who would hold much stock.

Whilst GRS are big, in some areas they are not the biggest.
It was my understanding that at least 500 of the original Accucraft Baguley Drewry locos were imported into the UK.
I know who sold the most of them by a long shot, and it wasn't GRS. Notwithstanding the "standing" of GRS in the Garden Railway community.

Just come across this "thread" expressing concerns as to the possible shortage of the new "Lyn" (91196).
At the risk of introducing blatant commercialism can I mention that I have at least 5 in stock at http://www.gscaleonline.co.uk/epage...bjectPath=/Shops/es116894_shop/Products/91196 < Link To www.gscaleonline.co.uk if anyone is desperate to acquire one. I also have several 2-4-2's in the US Black liveries (91197 and 91198) available.

The Green 3-Axle Coaches only appear to be available to the UK market as my USA contacts have never heard of them. This has given rise to rumours that Bachmann might be considering "Emily" as their next "Thomas & Friends" G Scale introduction - this would certainly be a great addition to the range.
