I suspect that those little linkages between the end units and the middle section are quite important.

Yes, they are effectively what makes the mechanism work; but they don't seem to need to be that accurate -I marked them out carefully, but they aren't to model engineering standards. There's a bit of play in the linkage, and also between the sliding truck and its guides: a rattle fit!

Footboards, grab handles, couplings and side chains all fitted, it was time for testing. Would it run OK?
