Looking to restore severely damaged limited edition LGB A72520 set - with photos

Hello all,
I have in my possession a limited edition LGB A72520 set that has seen a LOT of abuse, and since according to the box it's 1 out of 1000 I want to restore it as much as I can. The set as best I can tell is 20 years old and originally included a diesel loco and 2 flatcars with die-cast model car loads, as well as 4 plastic model workmen. Only the engine and one flatcar remain, and one of the flatcar's wheels has broken off from the carriage. The control box and track is still functional, and the engine still works as well but is pretty dinged up.

This is the only LGB set I've owned and I don't even know where to begin trying to fix this, whether they still make replacement parts, or if it can even be fully restored. I live hundreds of miles away from the nearest LGB dealer. Any help with this would be really appreciated; I'd hate to see something limited edition get trashed.

Here are the pictures I have taken of the set, starting with the receipt showing the set number:

The box showing it's #151 out of 1000. It came with an engraved nametag that I've crossed out to protect privacy:

The inside of the box, what remains of the set (original tracks are in the smaller red box):

The bottom of the only remaining flatcar, which is in decent shape apart from the broken, free-floating wheel:

The wagon is repairable, but getting the spares for the loco could be difficult.

I don't think the Shoema loco is made by Maerklin LGB any more, but you might be able to pick up a beat up 2nd hand one for spares.

The headlamp and hand rails are the main items that seem to be missing....

Doing some research, the loco is a variant of the LGB 2060 - if I can find 2060 parts, those might work. I also found the cars included with a different wagon for sale - sadly the original wagons themselves seem to be pretty rare.

EDIT: The wagon is a specially-colored variant of the LGB 4010 wagon. While it would be best if I could find an exact replacement, there's plenty of other 4010 wagons out there. I also found 3 out of the 4 plastic workman figurines that originally came with it. If I were to get these and the cars with the different wagon, I suppose the only real hurdle left would be fixing the broken wagon and dinged-up loco. I wishlisted an original wagon w/ car and the original loco on LGBstore.com but no telling if they'll ever get any of those again.

If anyone knows a good LGB repairer/servicer in Maine/New Hampshire/Massachusetts I'd perhaps trust them with the repairs.

OK then.

Let’s see if any of this helps in your search.

The set was also released as LGB 70520

The loco was released as LGB 20605
It has the later style of lights than the original 2060 see link below.
The handrails were the first thing to get damaged on the 'Schoma' locos and are getting hard to find )In any colour.)
It's worth noting that it shares quite a few parts with the track cleaning loco.

Hope this gives you some more search parameters.

I found the last workman as part of an unopened set on ebay. That's minor though... As for the die-cast cars, either one ebay seller I contacted has spares they can sell me, or I'll have to bite the bullet and blow $140 on another listing that has them plus an auto transport wagon. I may have the other original wagon in storage, but it'll almost certainly be quite broken. Still need to find a good LGB repairer, or failing that a good parts supplier.

The plastic wagon bases that the cars rest on are long gone and I have no idea if those are even findable, so I'll have to jury rig some sort of replacement.

Send me a PM with your address and I'll forward a set of matching wheels gratis. I've got lots of plastic ones!

a limited edition LGB A72520 set

Wrong side of the Atlantic, but these might be worth a look! Maybe they can be persuaded to post further afield!

All the best

I sent a message to the auctioneer for the first listing. No idea how they'll respond...

Update: that person will *not* send to the USA.

id try a search for the set number to see if you locate one. And,
I might suggest, patience and daily ebay checks will eventually list another set.
while the term is over used, in my years of LGB hoarding, that set is rare, uncommon, but not unobtainable.

Not sure you need a guy in New England - you can mail it anywhere in the USA. I would call TrainLi (TRAINLI - LGB Trains and G-scale Trains Experts | Best source for track, switches, DCC, accessories) and talk to them. I believe Dan Pierce repairs and installs DCC for them? He's on the US forums https://largescalecentral.com/profile/piercedan and lives in Massachusetts.

The UK Gov issued a warning some years ago that it was not safe to ship to the USA due to our litigation. I got around that with one supplier by signing and sending a "waiver" saying that, whatever happened, I would not sue him! Can't see how a US lawyer can sue someone in the UK anyway.

Thanks for the link, looks like I can get most of the bits and bobs I'd need to fix up the loco at least. The track cleaner loco does indeed have some matching parts. I would still like to find the two cars that came with it, ideally without having to buy a separate wagon. The plastic things that held the cars in the auto transport flatcars is probably too much of a longshot, so I'll have to think of a way to improvise something else for that.

Trainli does have the black and yellow hand rails.
Look at the track cleaner 2067/20670 for the lights as this loco used many of the 2060 parts.. Check Trainli.com and also modell-land.de for these parts which trainli orders in lots every 2 months.

Trainli does have the black and yellow hand rails and are sold in pairs. The 2060 lights are more like a periscope not square bases. The plow version did have similiar lights like the 20605.

Quick update on this: I've been busy with a new job, so I haven't had a lot of time to devote to repairing, but I got my hands on replacement figurines and I'm probably gonna bite the bullet soon and buy a large flatcar with the two diecast automobiles that were specific to this set.

I received the flatcar with the two automobiles, however the automobiles have some wear and tear. The steering axle for one of the front tires is broken, gonna have to glue that back together...and the BMW Z1 is missing a plastic headlight cover. Dunno what I'm gonna do about that, or the plastic molded pieces the cars sit in.

EDIT: I'll buy this and use it as a "parts car", but I still don't know what I'm gonna do about the plastic molded pieces that go in the flatcars...or the missing flatcar, now that I think about it.
