Chris, don't feel alone. I have purchased train items, then found that I already had the very same thing, tucked away in Briggadoon I think.
Mick, I like to keep things as simple as what's in between my ears. I try using whatever I have on hand in my modeling. The stakes on these cars are 10 penny finish nails. I have loads of them leftover from my forty plus years working. In fact, some of the hardware I have has become obsolete [e]180[/e]

They look exactly like the blacksmith/wagon builder employed by your railway has cobbled together from the resources to hand after being told by the managing director "We need something to carry logs, make them but don't spend any money".
I think they look great and if/when a log is loaded they will be even better, keep on building.

Well, I think they look great too! Very satisfying to make stuff out of bits n pieces.
Those bogies intrigue me - with the coiled springs, I guess they are quite "late". I still can't find a modern enough model to use mine on...OK, I'm stuck in Victorian times.
Springs then hadn't really changed much from stage-coach (and still used today, according to SWMBO). Would be interesting to know when the change was made from flat plate to whatever...(I think Gresley may have a hand in this)
