I have progressed my Garratt project as far as possible until I can purchase the necessary decoders, to then paint and finish the loco. Until then, I am considering another Garratt, with this being an 0-6-0/0-6-0. I have a further two very early LGB locomotives (both quite rare), being a #2017 and a #2016. The #2017 was only made in limited numbers and was similar to the #2017D, with the exception that it had a non-smoking stack and 'solid' wheels. The #2016 was also similar, but alas did not come with a powered tender. The tender block simply has power pickups.
Pictured is one drive block for the project. The beauty of this project is that it will not be necessary to reduce the tender body length and secondly, more of the boiler carrier should be over the rear axle on each drive. Loco drive will transit down to six foot diameter curves. Having a supply of spares does help when modifying old LGB.
I have been awaiting some early Stainz spare parts so was delayed a while. Parts arrived today so a little progress made. The Garratt will have a three-axle drive at each end (hardly prototypical). I will clean up the rod extension in the future.
I need to source suitable material to make the backbone of the centre engine carrier to build up the cab and boiler. I assume this loco will be several inches longer than the previous model.
excellent stuff. keep it coming. my dad and i are mid project on a 262 262 using mallet power blocks and probably a connie boiler.... i must post this too, but really intrested in this.
Mick,
Bunnings is definately my source of aluminium extrusions. Will also need some plumbing PVC pipe to beef up the existing pipe on hand. Next decision will be determining how long the loco will be. The previous Garratt (page 1) looks about right proportionately for its drive blocks. Hopefully, will get similarly pleasing proportions on this one.
