LGB #2017D times two

Started this week, progress report on a freelance Garratt. Basically, I had a flat aluminium plate, a leg from the wife's Ikea desk and a couple of LGB locomotives with powered tenders. The #2017D was never really a popular model and so not being able to sell them for a reasonable amount, I took the knife to them. Accessories are merely temporarily positioned for the photographs. The carrier underframe will receive side beams to fill out the space underneath. The loco will not be superdetailed.

Eventually will be fitted with decoders and sound.

thankyou for pointing me in the direction of your Merlin. Looks like Tom and I had similar directions. I also looked at installing pony wheels to save having to reduce the length of the tender bodies.
 
Underframe progressed. Will traverse down to six foot diameter. R1 is a possibility if swing clearance increased.

The basic frame. Pivot is a bolt with just the unthreaded shank remaining. The aluminium plate rests on a brass plate that is bonded to the LGB chassis moulding. I will sandwich 0.030" styrene in between to finalise height.

You can junk your leftover parts here....
I'm not sure what you call "a reasonable amount", they are going for UNreasonable amounts over here. Ain't no 30YO worn out beaters actually worth $100+
 
Just found this thread Tim - clever stuff and well executed - and, as usual, inspirational.:thumbup:
 
This is more the direction that I am heading with a fatter boiler and modified cab (no wing bunkers). Unlike most narrow gauge Garratts, I cannot fit a Belpaire boiler/firebox, as the cab front windows would need extensive alteration.

initially, I thought that the first boiler was fat enough. However, after looking at it for a few days, it made me realise that it was very thin and needed beefing up.
 
I really like your build, it's very proportionate and actually looks 'right'. If I had the spares and bits I wouldn't mind having a go at that myself.
 
Tim,
the LGB #2015, #2016 and #2017 series are the model to look for. This loco has the flat cabin area to mount the carrier pivot. Apart from glue, I had everything on hand to build this.

If I had to go out and purchase the two donor locomotives then this project would not have gotten off the ground due too expensive.
 
Tim, how about blanking off the coal tender top, fit an oil cap, and make it into an oil-fired Garratt, because then you could fit a fire-grate under the loco with a bright flickering light. Just a thought Tim. Alyn.:thumbup:

I like the idea. I actually do have an oil filler cap casting. Alas, I need the increased internal height of the coal moulding to accomodate the cone of the speaker. Coal burners did have 'ashbox glow' so a light is a possibility.
