Is Silicon as good as real?

Just a quick question, is silicon grease safe on plastics? I had to buy a tube of Silicon grease for putting a new water pump in the missus' car, and although I only needed a smear of it I've now got a big tube left over. I was thinking of using it to lube the sliding parts in the point motors and where the tie bars rub on points.
Many thanks,
Tim

The problem with ANY grease is that it attracts dirt and gunge. Best thing for points etc. is a dry lube like garphite or silicon polish (well buffed) or nowt at all. It should be great for coating your electrical connections though.:thumbup:

I really didn't think of that, thanks! :D

And there I was reading the title of this thread, and thinking of something COMPLETELY different..... :rolf:

Absolutely!! Never underestimate the attention-grabbing appeal of a thinly-veiled reference to boobies (or should that be a reference to thinly-veiled boobies...?)

For why were you using Silicone grease in the water pump?????? Can't say as I've ever had cause to grease a water pump on anything later than a 1940's Royce?????/

With that a titter ran around the site.......................8|

If you want a safe plastics grease then try Superlube......it has PTFE in it.

Yes Teflon is in lots of lubricants these days and to get the thread back on track its also used in prosthetic implants as an anti rejection aid.....I find age is the worst rejection aid going so maybe I need a shot of Teflon????

Hi isnt teflon = botox ????= just wondering--regards Dave

Steve, I find it washes off quite well with a bit of meths.

It's on a '93 Vauxhall astra, the water pump has to be lubed on the rear where the sealing o ring is, as the pump is also used to tension the timing belt. I don't think you can use any normal greases as they can perish the rubber and it can't be left dry as the pump may need to be turned in the future to adjust tension again.
And Haynes told me too. :rolf:

NO. Botox is the same germ as the Black Death Plague germ but modified as a beauty(?) treatment for conceited young AND old women (Fatter lips--get rid of wrinkles etc.,).:rolf:
Health education time!
Botox is a bacteria called Clostridium Botulinium, from which we get the term botulism. it is extremly toxic & causes paralysis . Death occuring when it reaches the lungs/heart. It's use as a beauty treatment uses this effect to permanantly relax muscles, hence reducing lines & wrinkles.
Plague or Black Death is caused by a bacteria called Yersina Pestis. This bacterias mode of action is to give off toxins which knock out the bodys immune system, leaving the bacteria free to multiply, these blooms of bacteria can be seen under the skin & are black in colour hence the name.
