Yep, that's pretty much why I've kept all my boxes too - if I ever need or choose to give up the hobby, or if, as you say, anything nasty happens - I want my collection to have the highest possible resale value. I've bought my stuff to run and enjoy, not for investment value, but anything that helps keep potential resale value up cannot be a bad thing.
Having said that, I really can't understand why this track set box should have been so attractive to people - OK, a boxed loco is more saleable than an unboxed one, so I can understand buying a replacement box for an expensive loco. But the track sets are bargain-priced anyway - you would probably get LESS for the boxed set than you would by selling the component parts separately....
