How to downsize images to show them here?

Bearing in mind that this whole site is fairly new, I'm surprised that the permitted image size is so small. Basically it means that when I talk about models I've done, without images to support me, as far as you all are concerned I could be lying through my teeth.

So how do I downsize my mostly 3Mp images to a format suitable to post here?

If you are using Windows the included 'photo gallery' or 'paint' both have image resizing options. However, if the original files are large resizing alone will not reduce the file size to below the forum threshold. To do that I use the 'save for web' function in 'Photoshop Elements' which gives a number of compression options and shows the resulting file size. A bit of a fiddly process which is why I generally post images on the various facebook groups nowadays rather than here. Doubtless there are other more streamlined ways of doing it that I am not aware of.
 
If you want to retain the higher quality pics (mine are never high quality!), copy and paste them so you can mess about with the copy.

If you have W10, go to your picture file, make a copy, then right click for a drop-down menu. Go to "Open" and select Microsoft Office Picture Manager. The picture then opens in another window. Go to top bar and select Edit. This then shows, on right of your screen, a menu. Go to the Resize and another menu shows giving access to different sizes, The top one allows different sizes (pixels) and I usually select the small document one. Click on and it will resize the image. You can select Save - or just go to the top R/H corner to click off the page - it will then ask if you want to save.

My pics come out at under 1/2 a Mb.

PS. You can also crop using that program - sometimes that reduces the Bits.
 
Thanks a lot, guys. Seems a real PITB compared with many other fora I write on that takes stuff straight off my file and auto-sizes it to suit.

I've got a lot to share, but I seem to be incapable of doing it, so I think that we are going to have to have a parting of the waves.

Nothing to do with how new or old the site is, somebody (IE ME) has to pay for the storage space for all these images, so as to keep the quality reasonable and the cost reasonable i have set the size as it is.

I've had Picassa since G Scale Mad days - it's a piece of tinkle to use, and also helps SWMBO with her own website :nod::nod:

Nothing wrong with using smaller pics on the forum, and the extra copies of reduced size don't really take up that much extra room on yer computer hard drive.

The only website that I've used with auto re-sizing is evilbay, and that's about as reliable as Ryanair :devil::devil:

Yes but I thought the size limit was 250kb per image, or am I out of date?
 
So what are the limits in pixels and file size? Pray tell "Dark Knight".

I also see people still do not always get that there are two radically different definitions of "size" for a picture.

And a good program to do this on a PC is IrFanView, free does a ton of things and does what you want easily, and controllably.

I'v just seen that recommended on another forum and am going to try it out.
 
To resize pictures I cheat by putting them on my desktop, I then right click them and send them to mail recipient.
My mail program automatically reduces them the I save them from the email waiting to be addressed and sent, to the desktop and replace the ones already there.
This is how I got around the picture size at work because IT would not let me load any picture management software.

Good suggestion. I just tried it and it does seem to bring the file size down much more than just resizing does. Thanks.

Not sure if you are using an iPad. I have an App "Reduce by Tobias Wideman" that allows me to Batch Reduce a load of pics. Course you will need to copy them onto the iPad. Worked very well.

Do not use it now as since the forum got updated my Camera size pics are just fine.

The forum s/w displays at a fixed size but lets you click on the image to see the original. Therefore I upload photos that are between 1K and 2K on the max dimension. My recent 'Otto' pic in the S kuplix thread is 1,399px × 743px. It takes up 567KB on my computer.

Given our Admin says we can go up to 2K wide, I will be taking advantage of that in future.

The Paint program in Windows can be used to resize, as was mentioned. It's clumsy but it works. MS Office Picture Manager is easier to use, and lets you edit a set of photos at once. You can resize a whole folder of photos in one click (well, maybe 2 or 3) by viewing the folder and selecting the photos you want to 'edit'.

Personally, I find Adobe Photoshop Elements to be an excellent program. It lets me create GIFs if I want, and has some neat features like "lighten shadows' - you'd be amazed what you can get from a dark photo.
 
Try Pixreszer, free, simple to use, and will handle one or a folder full of images. You have full control to choose any size you wish, to rename and to select where the new files go.
 
Pixresizer is a program that helps continue the lack of understanding of the 2 "sizes" of an image... it will change the number of pixels, but has no control over the compression ratio, i.e. the storage size.

Again, this is one of the fundamental problems of understanding "size"... clearly the file size will decrease when you resize a picture to a smaller number of pixels, but you STILL may have a file that takes too much storage space.

I would not recommend this program since it lacks that fundamental capability.

(yes, I know there will be people that say it works for them just fine... trust me, being in the industry since 1975, there is an EQUAL number that this program does not solve their issue)
