Hi! from West Texas with Stainz questions

Hi, lurker here. I've been in and out of HO since I was a kid and just got into G gauge this spring. So far I have a mix of Lionel, Bachmann, and LGB rolling stock & locos, including the inevitable Stainz.

My older basic Stainz (no smoke/sound/etc) is missing the water filler funnel and air compressor. I like the look without them and it seems like LGB made them up with the aid of their famous ruler. But those big holes! Any suggestions to fill or obscure the holes semi-permanently?

What years did LGB shade the loco & coach roofs with grey? Is it just paint? Can you strip it off? I like the plain black better, may swap the Stainz cab with the one from the body I got for (other) parts.

Any tips for straightening the smokestack rod without damaging the funnel? Mine's bent *right* below the funnel. I know they're not expensive, but I'd rather fix it.

Welcome to the forum Zephyranthes, I'm sure thd roof can be resprayed, try cleaning it first though. As to the other questions, we have a few far more qualified in answering than me.

I assume you mean the holes above and just behind the front driving wheel. There is a part missing here, it is a pipe between the 2 and has a sort if funnel at the top. Just ask your net browser to show ‘pictures of LGB Stainz’ if you look through them you should see a full side on view to see what is missing.

As for the roof, I think it may be that part is plastic colour. Just overpaint with bkack if you wish, best to remove the whistle first.

Greetings from teeny-tiny land here in Europe, good to see a lurker emerge.
You could perhaps check to see if the filler funnel and compressor are available from a loco being broken up (eBay?) or maybe even made as a 3D print.

Reading the original post, I think that Zephyranthes is quite happy with not having the missing parts, he isn't looking to replace them but to simply fill or cover the unsightly holes left behind by their absence... I think I'd just fill them with suitably sized plugs cut from plastic rod, and then match the paint colours of the boiler and tank parts as closely as possible to paint the plug ends.

If the holes are plugged, you could use a metallic paint, rather than trying to match the original.

That, or lots of dirt / wafer-scale, to disguise it.

Sorry for the confusion--yes, I like the look *without* those parts.
Thanks for the suggestions, I like the idea of metallic paint on plugs if I can't get a close match.
Re: roof shading, sounds like spray paint is the simple thing for the cab, I think I see green plastic peeking through. I'll see what color plastic the coach roof uses.
