Heyn Track crossing and Radlenker ?

I'm looking at the 45 degree crossing from Bertram Heyn

and I see that it is also possible to get a Radlenker for it as well.

Can those more widely versed in the arcane art of track tell me if I need the Radlenker as well and what it does ?
More generally, does Heyn track have fishplates and a profile that is compatible with LGB/PIKO track ?
I'm running LGB MTS digital as power and control.

Hi Chris,

a "Radlenker" is some sort of guiderail, that is used in switches.
Its purpose is to guide the one wheel of a wheelset, while the other one runs over unguided sections like the frog. The Radlenker therefor guides the inner side of that wheel.

In my opinion, it is necessary. Without Radlenkers, your wheelsets will tend to run out of track, "climbing up" the frog and derailing.
Many problems with derailments on switches are caused by that. The Radlenker has to be adjusted very well according the measurements to the rails.
The LGB R3 switches are well known for bad "Radlenkers" and the caused derailments.

Radlenker in this case would be the check rails in the middle of the diamond I think. Probably not strictly necessary but I reckon would be better for it?

I bought a Heyn kit to build a 60 degree crossing with the "Radlenker" (guard rails). Saved a few dollars with the kit and it was easy to assemble. I couldn't find another commercially available crossing and a bespoke was about three times the price. You will have to make sure the crossing is firmly supported as the rails are milled to allow them to cross and for the flangeways, so they tend to bend easily. The ties are a "feldbahn" style, looking like roughly sawn logs cut in half and rather short. Covered with ballast the ties should be fine; I didn't think it worth the trouble to try to tack extra bits on the ends. The frogs are some type of clear, hard plastic painted to match the rails. All of my small locos go through without hesitating.
